Vidalia, Georgia is a city located in the US state of Georgia. The population was 29,812 at the 2010 census. Vidalia is the county seat of Fulton County. The city is bordered by Clayton County to the north, Chattahoochee County to the east and south, and DeKalb County to the west. In 1886, when Atlanta was founded as a new city on the northeast corner of present day Midtown and Third Street North, its first mayor was Jno Baptiste Ebenezer Cook who wanted an open-air market in town center so he could sell goods door-to-door like those found in rural areas nearer Atlanta proper. To that end he built an overpass across Peachtree Road to house an outdoor market on Commerce Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue South – Market Street being then just one block wide at its widest point). A year later EbenezerCooks successor Phebe Parks acquired 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of Market Street from developer Daniel Burnham for $2 per acre (1/2 hectare). The town's namesake, Vidalia (pronounced "VID-a-lia"), comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place where water has been found." Wilkinson's family lived in present day Vidalia until 1835 when they relocated to Augusta, Georgia. In 1837, William Troup organized a group of landowning men and women who called themselves the Citizens' Association to purchase 2,000 acres of land northwest of Vidalia from John Todd for $1 per acre. The new settlement became known as Athens because it served as the capital of such a newly created state – Georgia – within two years. In 1840, Athens became the county seat of Cobb County and remained so until 1870 when it was moved to Decatur. During World War II, many people from Vidalia enlisted in service and were drafted into various military campaigns including World War I veteran General George Patton's famous "March on Rome" which took place in November 1944 near Vidalia.
