In 1948 the 3d Volunteer Squadron was created in Vidalia and served until October of 1951 when it was disbanding due to budget cuts. The 4th Volunteer Squadron was activated on July 15th, 1957 in Vidalia and served until November of 1977 when it disbanded due to budget cuts once again. In 1978 the 5th Volunteer Squadron was activated in Vidalia and served until 1984 when it disbanded due to budgetary cuts once again. On February 24th, 1987 the 6th Volunteer Squadronwas activated in Vidalia and serving until October of 1997 when it disbanded due to budget cuts once again. On January 15th, 2003the Air Force established an honorary detachment called "The Vampires" which is responsible for providing support to cadets at Savannah State University's Air Academy located southwest of town. This detachment originally consisted of two A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft but this increased number has been reduced over time due to budgetary constraints.
