The Valdosta area has been inhabited by the Creek, Cherokee and Chickasaw people for over two hundred years. In 1835, Georgia founded the town of Valdosta on the mouth of the Candler River. On July 20th, 1861, Union General William Troup moved into position on opposite banks of the Chattahoochee River and opened fire on Confederate forces under General Hood from positions atop Fort Moultrie hills. The first white man to visit Valdosta was Captain John Smith in 1775. He named the river "Rochester" after his home town in England. A post office was established at Valdosta in 1825, and growth continued throughout the 19th century due to its strategic location between two major railroads and its potential for agriculture and industry.
