The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Project is a research and historical endeavor undertaken by the Valdosta-Macon Museum of Art in order to preserve Marines' military decorations and artifacts that have been donated or given as gifts to local communities. The project commenced in 1984 and has since amassed an impressive collection of Marines' personal effects, including weapons, clothing, vehicles, and tools. Some of the most significant donations made to the project include a World War II Japanese kamikaze pilot's plane which was gifted to Valdosta in 1987 by then-Marine Colonel Toshihide Suga; a bulldozer donated to the museum by Marine Sergeant First Class Douglas A. Kincaid in 1992; a five-man reconnaissance team's M1A1 Abrams fighting vehicle which was gifted to the museum in 2004 by Marine Captain Donal J.Feinhardt; and a large number of items contributed by local war veterans such as tanks, artillery pieces, radios, helmets, and more. TheItems that have been used most frequently during this time period include weapons from World Wars I through II as well as Marines' uniforms from various campaigns throughout history. Many of these items are on display within the museum'sart galleries but also comprise parts of an ever growing permanent exhibit that currently includes over 1,500items spanning more than 50 years of United States Marine Corps history.

Valdosta, Georgia is a city in Georgia that was founded in 1802 by brothers James and John Valdosta. The city became a state capital in 1907. Valdosta is the county seat of Gwinnett County. The population was 97,824 as of the 2010 census. Valdosta is the largest city in Gwinnett County and one of the most populous cities in Georgia. The area around Valdosta has been inhabited for thousands of years, and it is thought to be one of the oldest continuously occupied American cities. In 1788, General George Washington visited Valdosta while on his way to attack Roswell, New Mexico. After landing at Augusta Bay on July 21, 1788, Washington inspected Fort Moultrie and its cannons before continuing his journey northward through Savannah River Valley to Troup Lake on July 24 where he met with local Native Americans who had been helping supply British forces fighting against French forces under Admiral Jean-Baptiste Elie de Saint-Laurent. In 1802, James and John Valdosta founded what would become Valdosta as a post office on land donated by their father from what is now Hudson County,. They named their town after Captain Blount who fought with General Andrew Johnson's army during the American Civil War at Bull Run Bridge overSabine Pass near Chattanooga. By 1819 there were 98 people living here including 26 farmers and 14 mechanics; this small community grew rapidly due to trade with nearby Cummingtown (now part of Atlanta) for goods produced by textile mills located elsewhere in Fulton County such as Clayborn and Thomson Mills The first school building was erected here in 1837 just east of present day US Highway 11/12 called “The Old School House” which operated until 1865 when it burned down By 1850 there were 4 businesses open: two stores owned by John Aikens & Co., an apothecary opposite Post Office Square; Jno Wertheimer’s grocery store; Ziegler beer store & distillery; & Drury’s drugstore The cotton gin began production hereabouts about 1840 which led to increased demand for flour from other parts of Georgia In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned all but one building along Main Street between Marietta Avenue and Auburn Avenue after taking refuge from Union troops outside our walls during the Battle Of Chantilly A large factory complex built around 1870 known as Highland Manufacturing Company operated here until 1886 when it moved south into Decaturville because of competition from mines operating near Dahlonega During World War II many factories closed due to wartime shortages while others produced munitions Drop Zone 8 Busch Gardens opened up next door which supplied food for war workers
