The Union City National Guard was organized on December 5, 1892. The guard began serving in the Georgia state militia and then the Confederate army as a volunteer force. On November 25, 1898, the armory in Union City was destroyed by fire. A group of citizens decided to form a local national guard battalion and raise money for reconstruction. The first unit was composed of five men and the first flag flew from a pole outside the armory on December 5th. In 1903, an annual muster was held to determine who would be allowed to purchase arms. Only citizens who owned firearms were allowed to participate. On May 26, 1907, an act passed by Congress authorized the establishment of a permanent national guard regiment in Union City with full military status and authority over all other militias within Georgia’s borders. This act also provided for increased funding for the Guard and made it possible for veterans residing in Union City to purchase rifles or shotguns at no cost. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson designated Union City as one of seventeen newly created federal Zone cities which would enjoy special protections under his New Deal program designed to stimulate economic development across America. These cities were intended to provide job opportunities for American workers during World War I and postwar years; but because of their close proximity to Atlanta, many people erroneously thought that these new city boundaries applied only to Union City.* When World War II began, most of Atlanta had been bombed into rubble* (*See photo below). The use of heavy artillery by both sides caused substantial damage throughout downtown* (*See photos below) so part of town remained largely abandoned until 1949 when work began on rebuilding downtown as part of Project Greenlight*. The National Guard Armory reopened on November 15th after being closed since January 1988 dueto its deteriorated condition*. It is now home to the Creative Arts Center which offers classes ranging from art history to photography *(*See photo below*) . The Union City, Georgia National Guard Museum has a history dating back to 1922. It was founded as the Union City Volunteer Fire Department Station No. 2, and served as a training ground for firemen in the early days of national guard service in Georgia. In 1942, the station became the Union City National Guard Armory and remains in use today as a museum. In 1962, the Georgia National Guard established its own unit in Union City. This unit was known as Company C of The 501st Airborne Infantry Regiment (Airborne), and it played an important role during the Civil Rights Movement. The unit was disbanded in 1969, but it has been periodically resurrected over the years to serve as a ceremonial force for special events or parades celebrating various aspects of military service within Georgia.
Union City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,467 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Fulton County and part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The downtown area has been called "the cultural and business center of south Georgia." Union City is home to the University of Georgia at Athens and seven other colleges and universities. The first known mention of Union City was on a map made by Capt. James Cook in 1795 when he included it in his journal while exploring South America. In 1801, Union City was renamed for General George Washington during the War for Independence. The city's growth began when cotton plantations were abandoned in the 1830s because of cholera epidemics that struck Mexico City; however, many southern farmers followed suit because cotton became more affordable in this new market place. In 1840, three men from Alabama named John Covington founded a trading post at what is now Old Fourth Street and Peachtree Road near what is now Ponce de Leon Avenue North. They named their post after King George II of England who had just become Emperor of Mexico City following victory over France at Saratoga Creek. As trade with Mexican ports diminished due to American competition, traders turned to inland waterways such as the Chattahoochee River for transportation supplies during this time period- which would later lead to railroads being built through central Georgia linking all these points together octagonally like spokes on a wheel Union City proper didn't gain its current shape until after World War II when developers started building apartment complexes and other suburban homes within its limits In 1951 UnionCity voters approved annexation by Atlanta making it an official city withinAtlanta limits On January 1st 1954 Mayor J J Kennedy ordered flags be lowered from all public buildings throughout Atlanta because they weren't aware that New Orleans also had a flag ordinance despite having no reference to UnionCity whatsoever! This order caused some consternation among some Atlantans who felt their rights had been violated although Mayor Kennedy explained that he only wanted to show respect for New Orleans' position as both an unofficial capital of Atlanta and its third largest city

In 1872, Congress authorized the National Guard to be used for guard duty on U.S. soil during times of war or insurrection. The Guard quickly grew into one of the most important elements of American society. by 1903, there were over fifty thousand Guardsmen serving in all 50 states and Washington D.C.. During World War I, the National Guard furnished more than two million men and women with service in all 50 US states and Puerto Rico. After World War II, National Guard troops served in many other peacekeeping deployments around the world including Greece (1949-1950), Vietnam (1965-1973), Panama (1989-1990), Bosnia (1995-1996) and Kosovo (1999).
Union City is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 40,611 at the 2010 census. Union City is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is the home of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Armstrong Technical Community College. Union City began as a small farming community on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. A post office was established in 1837, and by 1860 its population had grown to about 100 people. By 1870 Union City had become an important railroad hub for Georgia's cotton fields, and it became known as "The Cottonopolis of the South". In 1887 Union City was incorporated as a town with a population of around 1,500 people; it expanded rapidly during the late 19th century into what is now DeKalb County. In 1930 Union City incorporation was changed to be a city charter; it has since been renamed several times including Unio-city (1960-1968), Unio-town (1968-2006), Unio (2006-present). Union City experienced significant growth during World War II when its proximity to military bases made it an important port for munitions exports from Georgia's cotton fields. The city also played an important role in Gaithersburg’s rise to national prominence as a center for aerospace engineering after World War II. After years of decline during the 1960s and 1970s, Union City began to experience renewed development in the early 21st century thanks to rampant gentrification in nearby Alpharetta and Marietta neighborhoods. As suburbs such as Alpharetta and Roswell grew more expensive and less diverse than UnionCity overall, some residents withdrew their support for gentrification while others defended it against criticisms that they were being abandoned by their elected officials. In 2017 Mayor John Lewis announced his candidacy for mayor against incumbent Karen Handel; following Lewis' victory over Handel he declared himself «the first African American mayor of UnionCity»[1] due to his record supporting diversity initiatives within his city.[2][3]
