The Marines of Union City, Georgia were a part of the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1971. The unit was activated in 1951 as the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines and served in various locations throughout the Pacific Theater during the Korean War. In late 1957, they were redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Marine Division (1MC). They returned to Okinawa in 1959 and participated in the massive amphibious assault that liberated Okinawa from Japan’s occupation. In 1970, 1MC relocated to Marine Barracks on Iwo Jima where they continued their service through Operation Endgame and Operation Rolling Thunder. After more than three decades of faithful service to our country, 1MC deployed for another five years to Beirut, Lebanon where they supported U.S. Embassy staff during the Lebanese Civil War. Upon their return home they decommissioned at Camp Pendleton before being reactivated again in 1984 for deployment to Fallujah, Iraq as part of Operation Desert Storm. During their time with 2nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (2MEU) there were many memorable moments such as breaking ground for new rifle ranges at Al-Anbar Province; leading an assault on an Iraqi artillery base; liberating Kuwait; fulfilling a pledge made by President George H.W. Bush during his foreign policy speech “to protect democracy”; playingHostage Taker with Iraqi intelligence officers at Baghdad International Airport; and patrolling beaches along California's Central Coast while serving under Commander Ronald Reagan's administration – all while wearing fatigues! Today’s Marines are no strangers to deployments or gifts - particularly when it comes to giving back! Union City is a small city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,245 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is included within the Cobb County School District. Union City is located on the east side of I-285 near Macon and its namesake river, the Chattahoochee River. The first European to arrive in what is now Union City was Captain James Cook in 1795 during his third voyage around America. Cook landed on what is now known as "Cook's Island" at present day Union City's eastern bank. He named it for General John Covington, who had accompanied him on the ill-fated trip. In 1824, Colonel Elijah Hawkins established a post office at what was then known as "Hawkinsville." The post office changed its name to Union City in 1829 after gold was discovered nearby by Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men while exploring east Tennessee for Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Dedicated to service to humanity since 1829 by Rev. Drury Ingersoll, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Union City – one of several churches located downtown – Municipal Court House No 1 served as courthouse until 1915 when that building burned down; Municipal Court House No 2 replaced it about 1931 when that building also burned down; and finally Third Court Building which served from 1935 until 1971 when that building also burned down but was rebuilt using Federal funds with an addition including a gymnasium/conference room/entertainment hall/multi-purpose room atop an existing garage structure providing parking for approximately 175 cars before closure following a fire in 1984 which destroyed much of the complex done with government money This once busy civic center along I-285 became largely defunct between 1978 and 1984 due to economic conditions brought about by high taxes paid by commercial establishments surrounding it rather than public funding resulting from dwindling enrollment at those schools adjacent thereto . It reopened as part of Cobb County’s revitalization effort following 1999 legislation becoming effective authorizing up to $25 million per year from county coffers for various urban renewal initiatives .
