Union City was a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Savannah River. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. The city is named after Uniontown, Pennsylvania, which was founded by refugees from the American Revolution who were fleeing to escape British rule. Union City grew up around two main industries: shipping and manufacturing. Because of its location on the Savannah River, Union City became an important site for both navigation and trade during the early 1800s. It also played a role in the development of country music and NASCAR racing. In 1915, Union City was renamed after George Washington Carver, one of its most famous residents. Carver had been born in Uniontown but fled there during the American Civil War because he saw firsthand how harsh life could be for Confederate sympathizers in a nearby town named Kershaw (now called Muscogee County). He moved to Union City and started a vegetable garden that quickly became successful; he later donated his land tothe city as part of its annexation process. The city's economy turned sharply negative during World War II; however, it has since recovered significantly thanks to various investments by local businesses and entrepreneurs. Today Union City is known for its wide variety of retail shops and restaurants as well as its increasing number of cultural attractions - including several museums, art galleries, and theatres dating back to 1878.
Union City was founded in 1837 by two brothers, John and James Shively. The town was named for the Union of America, which had been ratified that year. The Shiveys were part of a group of settlers who traveled to Georgia in hopes of finding a new home. They arrived in what is now Union City on April 12, 1837. The Shively family operated a ferry service from their farmstead on the Chattahoochee River to nearby Decatur. In 1840, they built a house on present-day Main Street and started to grow crops. In 1851, the Shiveys relocated to what is now Jacksonville, Florida. John Shively died in 1858 and James took over the business. He continued running it until his death in 1865. James' son William took over the business after his father's death and ran it until he too died in 1893. In 1901, Union City was annexed by Jacksonville and became an incorporated city with its own government
