Union City is a city in Macon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 31,814 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Macon County by population. The Union City-Fayetteville School District serves all of Union City and Fayetteville. The area that now Union City was first settled by Scotsmen in 1799. They named their town after the union of two British colonies—Newfoundland and Nova Scotia—which they had just discovered. Union City was a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by white men who moved from what is now Decatur County to gain land east of the Chattahoochee River. The community's first post office opened in 1854. Union City grew rapidly and by 1870 had a school, library, Methodist Church and a few stores. In 1875, Union City became the second black settlement in Georgia when two African Americans were laid off from a cotton plantation and organized into a business team. They named their new venture "Union City Negroes" and it soon became one of the most successful black businesses in south Georgia. In 1892 Union City voted to become an independent city, but it reverted back to its original name within five years because of lack of voter support for secession from Fulton County. In 1920 Union City experienced its first tornado outbreak which destroyed several homes and killed three people. In recent years Union City has seen renewed growth as it becomes known for its arts and cultural attractions such as The Bullpen Art Gallery & Museum, which features works by local artists; Georgian Theatre Company; and Musicians' Village Hall which hosts music performances throughout the year as well as art exhibitions. Union City, Georgia was founded on July 20, 1838 by General James McMillan and his men in response to the Cherokee Indian Removal Act of 1830. The town was named for the Union River which ran through it. The first European settler in Union City was Captain John Pritchard who built a cabin on the bank of the river. By 1840, Union City had a population of around 100 people. The nearby town of Decatur became an important manufacturing center during the early 19th century due to its location at the mouth of the Chickasaw Creek and its access to raw materials from northern Alabama. In 1851, Union City's incorporation as a city made it one of Georgia's first black cities. In 1865, Union City was renamed Atlanta after Confederate General Robert Ewell's successful charge against Ulysses S. Grant's army at Bull Run Bridge. After Reconstruction ended in 1879, most African American residents left Atlanta for new opportunities in other parts of Georgia or South Carolina. In 1907, Union City annexed part of neighboring Decatur which increased its population by about 25%. In 1914, Union City became one of six municipalities withinAtlanta County when that county was created from portions of Fulton and Gwinnett counties. In 1934, Atlanta County erected a new courthouse in downtown Union City which still stands today as one of the largest courthouses in metro Atlanta.
