Union City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 16,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Union City water tower is the tallest building in Atlanta. The first Europeans to visit Union City were Frenchmen in 1796 and Englishmen in 1802. The town was founded by James McMillin on October 15, 1825 as a post office and trading center for farmers and traders traveling between Athens, Alabama (now Birmingham), Mobile Bayou (now Lake Lanier), and Savannah, Georgia. At its peak in 1830-1840 Union City had a population of 10,000 people and was an important commercial center for southern Georgia. In 1840 it became the capital of ConfederateGeorgia after Charleston was sacked by Federal forces under General Ulysses S. Grant following the Battle of Fort Sumter; Union City continued to be the capital until May 1865 when Atlanta became the new capital of Georgia. In 1862 Union City suffered greatly during Sherman's "March to the Sea" campaign against Confederate General Robert Ewell's army; most notably, several stores in town were burned down by order of Sherman while he was marching through town on his way to nearby Pee Dee Island where he planned to destroy Confederate artillery batteries that defended that island. After Sherman's march ended, Union City slowly regained its former prominence as a commercial center with many successful businesses developing such as Jardine & Co., Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (thenAtlanta International Airport), Coca Cola Company Bottling Plant #1 (later Coca Cola Company Bottling Plant #2), Waffle House restaurant chain precursor Olive Garden franchisee Bob Evans Restaurants Inc., Gadsden Millinery store precursor Partick Mills Corporation and other major companies who did business there before Interstate 95 opened up south into Fulton County which destroyed much of downtown UnionCity including many brick buildings built during its heyday but still standing today such as Woolworths Store #2 located on Peachtree Street across from now defunct AT&T Building). In recent years however large flameouts have occurred within some old brick buildings such as Woolworths Store #2 which has resulted in extensive damage including loss of both roofing and walls leading to speculation that this building may fall victim to similar fire antics seen elsewhere throughout Atlantica over recent years - most recently nearby Sears Tower which also went through significant damage from heavy flames last year - although any future demolition or restoration plans will likely have more oversight from city officials due to concerns about possible negative consequences should another large fire occur within one of their historic brick buildings! UnionCity Mayor Terry Jones has been quoted saying "We've never let anyone push us around", adding "We're not going anywhere". However given what happened at nearby Sears Tower just prior to Mayor Jones being elected - where firefighters successfully extinguished all remaining fires within 5 minutes despite massive smoke exposure - it seems fair to ask if anything Mayor Jones does would actually result in displacement or away from certain business opportunities...although mayoralty changes do happen often enough that perhaps some form of governance change might be necessary long term once more serious problems arise?
