Union City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was founded by freedmen and their families in 1814 as a small community on what is now the eastern edge of downtown Atlanta. Union City grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location on the rail line connecting eastern Georgia with southern Alabama and Tennessee. The city's growth prompted it to annex adjacent townships in 1859, creating an even larger area known as Union City Township which became one of Atlanta's most highly populated areas by the end of the 19th century. The cotton industry declined following World War II and Union City experienced declines in population, employment, and tax base throughout much of the 21st century; however, recent efforts have brought some recent resurgence to Union City through redevelopment projects such as new housing developments and commercial spaces . In addition to its role within Atlanta's overall economy, Union City has become increasingly popular for both education and recreation opportunities due to its wide variety of cultural attractions including art galleries, theater productions, music venues and more than 100 parks . Union City was named after General James Haines' headquarters camp located about two miles east of present-day Union Citrus Heights on Bulloch Road (now Peachtree Rd.). On November 14th, 1814 Haines ordered his men from nearby Gainesville to march into Chattanooga overland under cover of darkness so they could be close enough for supplies without being seen or heard by friendly forces garrisoned there. When news reached General Haines that his units had marched into Chattanooga he ordered them back south along Bulloch Road en route back home. This event helped spur development around this campsite as freedmen began moving back into central Georgia after serving in Mexico or other Confederate military campaigns
