Union City, Georgia was founded in 1821 as a cotton plantation by Captain John Dunlap. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period and became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. By 1851, Union City had a population of 30,000 people and was home to two banks and four churches. In 1865, Union City became the capital of Confederate Georgia and was Wilson's only victory in the war. The city sustained significant damage in battle but eventually recovered and prospered after the war. During Reconstruction, Union City quickly resumed its status as a center of commerce and culture. In 1872, Union City played host to the first international exposition of American art, which attracted attention from all over the world. The city also hosted several major events during this time such as the Atlanta Cotton States Fair in 1881 and 1895. In 1921, Union City merged with neighboring Decatur to form a new municipality known as Decatur-Union City. This merger allowed for more efficient government intervention into local businesses and helped spur economic development within Union City. Over time,Decatur-Union CITY has become one of Fulton County's most vibrant communities with strong ties to its surrounding suburbs. Union City was founded on December 3, 1811 by George Washington and his brother James Robertson. The town was named for the United States of America, which had just been formed. As the years passed, Union City grew to become a center for commerce and culture in Georgia. In 1821, Union City was chosen as the capital of Georgia. The city hosted many political events during its early days and played an important role in the development of the state. In 1828, Union City became home to the first public school in Georgia when a group of settlers endowed it with land near present-day downtown Atlanta. By 1830, Union City had grown to include over 100 businesses and 800 residents. The city’s growing population necessitated expanded infrastructure and new buildings were erected throughoutlying neighborhoods like Elmwood Park and Dunston Heights. In 1846, Confederate General Robert Ewell abandoned Allatoona Valley after losing a key battle there; this led to increased traffic congestion in Union City which quickly started causing problems for local officials. Ultimately, these issues led to city officials enacting various measures meant to improve conditions such as increasing funding for street cleaning and traffic control ordinances. Despite this effort however, congestion continued to increase until 1854 when construction began on what is now known as Peachtree Street Bridge – one of Atlanta’s earliest engineering feats. This bridge helped reduce traffic congestion within the city limits for years before it finally fell into disrepair in 1966). Despite these challenges throughout its history, Union City has seen great strides since becoming an incorporated community in 1968 – including becoming a major player in modern Georgian society with several popular cultural venues (such as Ponce de Leon Theater), progressive politics (including representation on both local and national committees),and strong economic growth that has contributed significantly to its current status as one of Greater Atlanta’s most vibrant cultural communities. Today,Union City remains one of Georgians’ most popular tourist destinations due to its unique mix of historical attractions and contemporary amenities that offer visitors something different every time they visit; from traditional downtown streetscape walkways reminiscent of 19th century Philadelphia neighborhoods like Cedar Grove or Druid Hills Reserve eastward through leafy new districts like Fine Arts District or Lakeshore Village southward through Braves Field (home of baseball’s Atlanta Braves)to world-renowned art galleries like MoMA PS1 or Ponce de Leon Museum complete with lush botanical gardens located right outside their doors; everything makesfor an interesting day trip or weekend getaway!
Union City, Georgia was founded in 1837 by James White and his wife, Fannie. The city was named for the union of two adjacent counties, Union County and Muscogee County. The first settler in Union City was James White. In 1838, Greene Tucker opened a grocery store in Union City. In 1840, the first post office in Union City was established. The town continued to grow throughout the 1840s and 1850s as farmers moved into the area to raise crops and build homes. In 1851, a sawmill was built in Union City and began operating until 1865. In 1860, John Capps purchased land around what is now the intersection of Paulding Street and Main Street in Union City from James White. Capps would become one of the most influential men in town early on; he served as mayor (1862-64), justice of the peace (1872-74), and treasurer (1876-78). In 1870, he annex’d Muscogee County to form Cobb County. In 1888, George Washington Carver arrived at what is now Union City with his family to start a new farm near present day Jackson Road/Carr Avenue on which he would create many successful businesses including Atlanta’s only white flour mill (Carver Mills) which became world famous for its bread products such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
