Airforce gift history in Union City, Georgia began with the first purchase of an airplane by the United States Air Force on December 15, 1941. The C-47 Skytrain was purchased by General James H. Mattis and delivered to Wright-Patterson AFB on October 14, 1946. On that date, the USAF activated its 1st Fighter Squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB and placed orders for six P-51 Mustangs. These planes were delivered between 1945 and 1947. Between 1951 and 1957, three Boeing 707s were acquired from American Airlines as part of a program to provide air superiority over Korea. In 1958, two more Boeing 707s were added to the Aircraft Storage Unit (ASU) at Wright-Patterson AFB to be used for storage until new aircraft could be procured or upgraded. This program lasted until 1970 when all seven Boeing 707s were sold off to South African Airways (SAA). In 1984, Northrop Grumman Corporation became interested in acquiring an F4U Corsair from McDonnell Douglas Corp., which had been stored at ASU since 1971. With no other available airplanes within McDonnell Douglas Corp.'s inventory, Northrop Grumman Corporation decided to instead acquire four Convair 880 jetliners from Beechcraft Corporation as part of a deal announced on February 5th of that year. These jets would serve as the basis for Lockheed Martin's conversion of Beechcraft CF 79A into the A-10 Warthog ground attack plane known today as "The Freedom Fighter". The first A-10 Warthog took off from Kennedy Space Center Airport on July 16th of that year following delivery of its critical components including engines and cockpit systems from McDonnell Douglas Corp.. These planes served with distinction during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 before being replaced by newer models in 1995 after their retirement from service due to budget cuts sponsored by then Defense Secretary Dick Cheney. On November 3rd of that year, Union City became home to the first USAF detachment stationed outside Washington D.C., when members of the 436th Airlift Wing arrived at Ronald Reagan National Airport utilizing leased transient personnel carriers operated by Northwest Airlines Incorporated (NWA). This detachment would remain active until 1992 when it was disbanded due to budgetary constraints once again introduced by then Defence Secretary Dick Cheney who wanted USAF aircraft stationed closer within Washington D .C . ADC was created in 1948 and it helped develop and deploy aircraft into battle throughout Europe and Asia. In 1957, ADC merged with Air Forces Europe to form United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). This led to increased activity at Union City as more planes were produced there. In addition, USAFE developed new technology at the airbase which helped improve battlefield effectiveness. The airbase saw further growth after United States Aerospace Corporation (UASC) was founded in 1969. UASC helped create new industries at Union City such as biotechnology and information technology. This growth led to more jobs and money forUnion City residents. In 2003, USAFE merged with NATO’s Allied Air Forces Europe to form Unified European Air Command (UEAC). This led to increased activity at Union City as UEAC developed new technologies which helped improve battlefield effectiveness across Europe and Eurasia. Today, USAFE is responsible for numerous programs which help improve global security including missile defense systems, counterterrorism efforts,and cooperative operations with other organizations abroad
Union City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 16,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Union City is located on the Chattahoochee River just east of Interstate 285 and northwest of downtown Atlanta. The first white settlers in Union City were John Mercer and his family who arrived in 1799 from North Carolina. They named their new settlement after the union of two British colonies, Upper Canada and Lower Canada. In 1802, they founded what is now known as the Mercer University School District and built a log courthouse which served as both town hall and courts until 1906 when it burned down. In 1834, James Caldwell established a cotton gin on what is now Spring Street in Union City to raise money for his unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign against Andrew Johnson. Caldwell was successful enough to run again but lost because he could not get development permits from local officials. He donated land to Union City so that it could be developed into an agricultural center with a flour mill, cheese factory, gristmill, sawmill and other mills soon followed. The city's population increased rapidly during this time with many Irish immigrants coming here to work in agriculture or service businesses such as hotels and grocery stores; some also settled permanently in Union City after having arrived
