Georgians have been keeping military and paramilitary forces at the ready since the Revolutionary War. Militia units were formed throughout the Colony of Georgia, and by 1800 there was a regiment of dragoons stationed in Tifton. The first national guard unit was organized on December 25, 1801, when volunteer militia units from three counties banded together to form the First Regiment of Georgians (later 1st Georgia National Guard). The regiment served until 1802 when it disbanded due to lack of volunteers. In 1805, the Second Regiment of Georgians (later 2nd Georgia National Guard) was organized and served through the American Revolution. However, because Tifton was not part of any state during that time period, its membership is unknown. The Third Regiment of Georgians (later 3rd Georgia National Guard) was organized in 1811 and served through both the American Revolution and Reconstruction north of Atlanta. It disbanded in 1865 after only two years due to lack of volunteers. The Fourth Regiment of Georgians (later 4th Georgia National Guard) was organized in 1813 and served for nine months during the War for Independence before disbanding due to manpower problems. It wasn’t until 1862 that a permanent national guard unit was established with headquarters located at Fort McAllister on Peachtree Street in downtown Tifton. This unit would later be renamed as the First Battalion, Atlanta Infantry Regiment after being raised from scratch within city limits under Lieutenant Colonel John Randolph Grayling on October 15, 1862 . For most of its history however it operated as a battalion-sized detachment attached to other regiments or brigades while providing service primarily near Atlanta . In 1886 this company became an artillery battery known as Battery Ewell which fought at Perryville against Confederate forces

Tifton is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 9,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta-Fulton County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tifton" was given to the village by General James Hickey during his occupation of this area in 1824 as part of an effort to rename all villages in what is now Fulton County after military heroes or founding fathers (Hickey's choice for Tiftonsville). The first settler in Tifton was George Peebles, who built a log cabin on the side of a hill overlooking the Chattahoochee River about 1795. The present day town was founded on December 12, 1825 when Andrew Stephenson and his family established a store and post office at what is now its center on Depot Street. At that time, it consisted only of four homes and two stores. In 1830, John Gamble Estes moved from Macksboro to establish himself as a trader in this area and started trading with Native Americans along the Chattahoochee River. He also began building up an agricultural empire which spanned much of central Georgia including parts of Tifton today including McIntosh Road and Old Milton Road near Paulding Park Elementary School - these developments are still extant today thanks to Gamble's donation land grant from President James Buchanan in 1853). In 1836, John Gadsden purchased some 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day Tifton from David Dixon for $1 million dollars ($102 million adjusted 2016 dollars), making him one of America's largest landowners during that period – he would later become known as Atlanta's "Fathers Merchant".
The history of the National Guard can be traced back to 1814, when the first national guard companies were formed in thirteen states. The first national guard regiment was organized on December 9th, 1814, by President James K. Polk in order to provide a militia for the defense of Washington D.C. The first national guard unit was called the 1st Regiment of Dragoons and it numbered only eighty officers and men. However, this small force was quickly augmented by other units and eventually grew to over two thousand soldiers. By 1829, there were more than three hundred guardsmen serving in seventeen states across America. At this time, many Guard detachments served as auxiliaries to local militias during times of war or insurrection. In 1830, Congress passed an act making the National Guard a permanent part of the American military system and providing that Guardsmen could not be drafted into any state militia service without their consent and that they could not be used for political purposes or against unionists or democrats. In 1836, after a series of defeats at the hands of Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek and Chapultepec Creek (two major engagements fought during Santa Anna’sMexican War), President Andrew Jackson created what is now known as The Regular Army with one million men under arms. This new army was made up exclusively of volunteers from within each state: New York had 9800 soldiers while Massachusetts had 6000 troops; Pennsylvania had 4000 soldiers; Georgia had 1000 troops; West Virginia had 100 Cavalry troopers; Louisiana had 7000 Infantry regulars). Throughout these years, the Guard played an important role in both colonial and post-colonial America by providing security for settlers living near Indian territory or guarding critical infrastructure such as ports and bridges. In 1846 Congress authorized TheNationalGuard Act (Pt XIII) which provided for compulsory enlistment in all fifty U States plus Washington DS., except California where citizens refused to active duty because they saw no real need for a military establishment outside civil governance duties assigned thereto by law (the California National Guard being exempted from military service due to its own unique situation)). The size of each state’s National Guard increased progressively through enrollment starting at 400 men per year in 1850 then gradually increasing until it reached 2200 enlisted men per month by 1861 when fully mobilized status was granted unto all fifty U States plus Washington D.C.. This period also witnessed some significant changes within the Guard itself with advancements in technology which has led directly to enhanced capabilities including digital communication equipment which allowed commanders direct access to battalion commanders throughout America on a real-time basis ablethusforthtocommandandcontrolallunitseffectivelyontheground
