Tifton is a small city in south Georgia, United States, with a population of around 50,000. It is the county seat of Muscogee County. The name Tifton comes from the Creek word "tifon" meaning "a little stream." The town was founded by European American settlers in 1819 as part of the Treaty of Rome. The first post office in Tifton was established on December 3, 1820. It was renamed Muscogee County on February 6, 1821. In 1827, Tifton became the capital of Muscogee County and held this status until 1868 when Atlanta took over as the county seat. The cotton industry began to decline after 1830 and by 1840 there were only a few hundred residents left in Tifton. However, during Reconstruction period (1865-1877), many African Americans moved to Tifton and its surroundings to work in the new white society. African Americans made significant contributions both politically and economically during this time period. They were also active in local community organizations such as churches, schools and law enforcement agencies. During World War II most citizens supported their military service through patriotism or participation in related events such as Victory Day parades or serving in government positions like firefighters or police officers. After war ended however economic conditions changed rapidly due to advances technology which had a large impact on manufacturing industries throughout America at that time including automobiles, electronics and steel production among others
