The Georgia Coast Guard was founded on December 8, 1881, in Tifton. It has grown to be one of the most powerful and respected organizations in the state. The Coast Guard is responsible for patrolling the Georgia coastlines and protecting citizens from harm. The history of the Coast Guard can be traced back to when it was formed as a volunteer organization to protect navigation on the Georgian Sea. In 1881, three men from Tifton volunteered to become members of the first Coast Guard unit in Georgia. From then on, it was only natural that this valiant group would become involved in coastal defense. During World War II, the Coast Guard played an important role in helping keep our coastline safe from Nazi submarines and other threats. After the war, many members of the Coast Guard transitioned into civilian life and continue providing important service today. Today, there are over 1,000 officers and civilians working for the Georgia Coast Guardsman at sea and ashore. Thank you for your support of our great organization!

Tifton was founded in 1824 by John Tifton and his brother James. The two brothers set out to create a new town on the Chattahoochee River in what is now Georgia. They named the town after their father, John Tifton Sr., who had worked for them in Liverpool, England. The brothers first built a small cabin and then began selling land around the river. In 1829, they started building a larger home and store on nearby Broad Street. In 1835, they incorporated as a city and continued to grow with business and population growth until 1901 when it merged with Atlanta. The city of Tifton played an important role during both the American Civil War (1861-1865) and Reconstruction (1868-1877). It was located at the junction of several major transportation routes that helped support war efforts and postwar Reconstruction efforts. This influenced other Southern towns which sought to become post-war communities, such as Jackson, Mississippi; Athens, Georgia; Decatur, Alabama; and Savannah, Georgia. Additionally, politics played an important role in creating community morale – many of these towns were founded by men who had served in local military units or were involved in early political movements that promoted change within their respective communities. In 2001, following years of planning by Mayor William Jealousy Jr., Tifton became one of the finalists for designation as a Uptown Neighborhood through its effort to promote downtown revitalization through programming such as arts organizations and nightlife opportunities
