Airforce aircraft have been a part of the Georgia Air National Guard since 1947. The unit has played an important role in many wars, both during and after the Second World War. During the Vietnam War, for example, the squadron was responsible for providing fighter cover for ground forces as well as carrying out bombing raids against North Vietnam. Today, the Georgians fly CF-18s and F-15As from Macon AFB near Atlanta. The Tifton Air Force Base is home to three squadrons of Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers used by Georgia’s air force. These planes provide refueling and support services to Georgian jets flying in international airspace. The squadron that currently uses KC-135s is No. 15 Squadron RAF ( formerly No 4 Squadron RAF). The plane dates back to 1948 when it was donated by King George VI of England to be used by the Georgian Air National Guard; at that time it was known as No 2 Squadron RAF). In 1956, when NATO began airstrikes against Yugoslavia, Tifton became one of its first USAF bases in Europe; this continued until 1999 when it reverted back to UK Bomber Command control. After the war ended, many residents decided to return home while some moved away for new opportunities. However, during both eras there were still countless things that made TifTON special: Its rich history; vibrant culture; easy access to public transportation;and plenty of activities available for everyone including musicians and artists who chose to call it their home turf
