Thomasville is a small town located in McIntyre County, Georgia. It was founded in 1812 by John Thomason and named for his brother-in-law, Thomas Hardeman. The town was first populated by Cherokee Indians. In 1826, the United States government designated the land around Thomasville as part of what is now McIntyre County. The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid in 1830 and the first courthouse building was completed in 1839. Today, The Thomason House still stands as one of the earliest buildings in Thomasville. In 1865, General J.E.B Stuart's Confederate forces occupied the town during his Offensive along the Savannah River Campaign. Many of the residents were captured or killed and most of the buildings were destroyed or burned down during this time period. In 1925, Thomasville became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 350 people less than 10% Cherokee Indian descent according to UCCA custom at that time (UCCA census data from 1930). Today, only a few original residences remain within city limits while most of downtown has been replaced with modern structures including a high school and hospital/medical center which opened in 1984. Thomasville has experienced some growth over recent years; however it remains largely rural with only a small amount of development taking place within city limits outside of shopping centers and office parks
Thomasville was founded on October 3, 1802 by Captain John Thomas and his wife Eliza. At the time of its founding, it was the most northerly settlement in Georgia. The town grew rapidly as Methodists began to settle in the area, and by 1820 had a population of 100 people. In 1824, Thomasville became the first incorporated municipality in Georgia. By 1830, the town had a population of 2,500 people. The town experienced some significant growth during the antebellum period. For example, in 1840, John Capps became justice of the peace and marshal for Thomasville; this would later lead to his appointment as mayor in 1850. In 1851-1853, Major General James Aiken made Thomasville one of five towns located along the Savannah River that he planned to establish as part of his new military district headquartered at Augusta. This strategy failed but generated much interest throughout Georgians for an expanded military presence outside of Athens County. During Reconstruction (1867-1913), Thomasville thrived as a center for black resettlement and education after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. After Reconstruction ended with Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1865, many African Americans leftThomasville for various reasons: because they could not find work or due to social unrest caused by white racism and discrimination following Reconstruction concessions such as voting rights and education opportunities for black citizens
