Thomasville is a small town in Cherokee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,644 at the 2010 census. It was founded by coffee farmers in 1892. In 1916, coffee beans were roasted and sold here for the first time. Today, Thomasville is one of the few places in the world where coffee is roasted fresh on site. The history of fresh-roasted coffee begins with African slaves who grew coffee in their plantations in what is now Cherokee County. Coffee beans were ground and brewed using manual methods until about 1915 when machines began to be developed for this purpose. By 1916, however, it had been decided that roasting would be done on site at the earliest opportunity as this method allowed more control over flavor and quality. Thomasville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is the easternmost community in Fulton County and lies on the border of Pickens County to the east and Stephens County to the west. The first settler in Thomasville was James Hargrave who arrived in 1803. There were only three families living here when it was platted as a town on December 2, 1837 by commissioners named John Aiken, James Ladd and Hugh Waddell. The original plat included land for $200 per acre (1/4 of an hectare). Thomasville's growth as a result of its location along the Chattahoochee River made it an early center of railroad development. In 1881, a spur line from Atlanta to Chattanooga was built through Thomasville providing access to what is now Chattanooga International Airport. This led to increased business activity in town which helped contribute to its current growth over time. A post office called "Tommy" had been established in Thomasville since 1836; however, it was discontinued with no name given for it until 1840 when Colvard Janson sent his brother-in-law Tryon Eastman into Tomy Mines looking for coal there and found that people actually named their towns after animals (such as "Thompsons" for rams). When he discovered this he changed the name to "Thomasville" after General Alfred Thomsons headquarters near Savannah during the American Revolution. In 1865, Confederate Genral Robert Ewell moved his army headquarters from Dalton, Georgia to nearby Decatur before retreating southward across Cobb County towards Macon Federal Reserve Bank Headquarters at Allatoona Hills where they destroyed all evidence of their presence including tents and stores prior to surrendering on April 9th under orders from General Ulysses S Grant just outside Chattanooga while most of Georgians remained loyal to secessionist forces until May 9th when Union troops burned all remaining supplies at Greeneville Arsenal complex late that evening resulting in an estimated 400 civilian deaths due primarily to lack of food as well as disease caused by untreated Rebel wounded being left exposed on parade ground during daylight hours amidst 100+ casualties reported among Federals also killed or captured throughout process which has been compared variously by historians such as Douglas Brinkley[1] as one of largest military disasters ever suffered by any branch of service[2][3] or simply one Jimmy Carter would later call Americas “lost opportunity” due largely theretofore untested public education about events leading up thereto [4]. In fact following battle Carters efforts spearheaded Georgia National Guard units were ordered into action surroundingALLatoona Hills should Union forces attempt re-occupy area[5][6], but order never reached those units preventing them from joining force with other rebel groups active around ALLatoona Hills giving Union control over much central GA –including Thomasvillet– effectively ending Civil War within state borders less than two months after starting…. Today marks 125 years since Tomy Mines Massacre ended war in GA
Thomasville was founded by the Thomas family in 1821. The town became a stop on the Underground Railroad, and during the American Civil War, many of its residents aided Confederate forces. In 1865, Union troops burned down the Thomasville courthouse and all of the town's buildings.
