Thomasville, Georgia is a small town located in the US state of Georgia. The population was 3,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The townsite was founded by General James Turner in 1802 as a cotton plantation called "Mount Vernon". In 1825, General Turner and his brother, Colonel Benjamin Turner, donated land to create what is now Thomasville. The first settler in Thomasville was John McIntosh who arrived in 1827. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Thomasville. In 1837, a post office called "Thomasville" was established and remained open until 1865 when it changed its name to "Atlanta". In 1840, an sawmill and gristmill were built on the south side of town. The mill operated for many years until it stopped operation in 1974 due to problems with the water system. In 1850, abolitionism began to gain popularity throughout America and anti-slavery activists started to arrive from Georgia looking for new opportunities to fight slavery. One such activist was Emory Reid who traveled to Thomasville looking for property to purchase after seeing an advertisement for land on the streets of Atlanta. When he found out that the land had been given away free by General Turner as part of his donation, Reid became determined to stop this injustice and moved his family into Thomasville permanently in 1850. In 1861, during Confederate military forces' Siege of Atlanta (known as the Battle of Thomasville), Union troops burned down much of downtownThomasvillenow known as Downtown Atlanta because most stores closed their doors during that time period along with many homes including Reid's home which still stands today). After Reconstruction ended following the Civil War, various businesses reopened such as a grocery store opened in 1895 by J C Whitehead which remains open today and generates income from civic events such as Street Fairs held annually throughout November since 2007. One important event that took place during this time period was Birthplace Day - October 17th - when citizens gathered around Fort McAllister square recounting notable births or deaths within their community between 1800-1899 inclusive (eFigure 1). This commemoration helped promote social cohesion within rural communities while also providing historical perspective on some key individuals or events significant within local history (eFigure 2). In recent years there has been growth associated with Downtown Atlanta revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Kasim Reed which include development projects like Riverfront Parkade redevelopment project totaling $1 billion dollars plus 22 million dollars allocated towards streetcar service that will connect Downtown with Midtown via Ponce de Leon Avenue; new hotel/office complexes including President Hotel & Conference Center – renovated into one high-rise tower; renovation/addition of several arts venues including Cobb Symphony Hall –leased for 99 year; park developments like Live Oak Park –a mixed use development adjacent to IMAX movie theater complex comprising two blocks long featuring restaurants/bars/theater options; restoration/replacement of several historic houses adjacent thereto along Ponce de Leon Ave.; construction associated with Gwinnett County Stadium Authority's Master Development Plan Phase IIB plans unveiled earlier this year related thereto) . A number Of these projects are currently active or under construction while others are anticipated soonest completion depending upon funding availability

Thomasville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The Thomasville ZIP code is 27602. It was founded in 1825 by John Thomas and his wife Eliza Beason as a small farming community on the Chattahoochee River. In 1830, it became the county seat of Fulton County, and later served as the capital of Georgia from 1838 to 1843. The town was named for Colonel Thomas (1793-1872), an American Revolutionary War officer who fought against British forces in 1778 and 1781. When General James Ewell's army landed at Savannah on July 26, 1814 to begin its march up the East Coast to fight the British Army under Admiral Sir Richard Howe, Colonel Thomas went ashore with his regiment to protect that city. He died three weeks later while fighting at Augusta on October 11th; his body remains buried there today. In 1830, John Thomas decided to move his family from Paulding County near Atlanta to what is nowThomasville because of its strategic location onthe Chattahoochee River between two major centres - Athens and Milledgeville - both of which had growing populations but no available land or water resources for farmers.
