The first commandant of the Coast Guard was Captain George H. Clements who served from 1923-1929. From 1929-1933, Rear Admiral Willis S. Bowen served as Commandant of the Coast Guard and from 1933-1941 Rear Admiral John W. Beecham served as Commandant until his retirement in 1941. In 1951, Rear Admiral James Fenton became Commandant and he remained in that position until his retirement in 1970. From 1970-1973, Commodore Louis Pugh served as Commandant until he resigned because of ill health; then Lieutenant Colonel David Grosse took over for him and continued to serve until his retirement in 1988. Since 1988, Commander Dennis D'Augello has been Commandant with no previous experience as such when he became aware of their gift history.
Thomasville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,534 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Fulton County by area. The town was named for Thomas Jefferson Davis, who served as the first President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. Thomasville began as a small hamlet on the east side of Stone Mountain in what is now Kingsport and was founded by Colonel John Troup in 1792. In 1800, Colonel Troup built a sawmill and gristmill on Creek Run creek just south of present-day Thomasville. The mill stream changed its name to Tomahawk Creek after General Tomahawk's military victory over Spanish forces atbooth November 8th 1800 near what is now downtown Thomasville. After Captain James Aiken's discovery of oil well at Tomahawk Township in 1827, production from wells increased rapidly and development around these facilities led to the naming of many streets and buildings throughout the community including: Gadsden Street (now US 1), Albemarle Street (now US 11), Indian Hill Road (now SR 522), Patton Avenue (now SR 624) and much later Pleasant Valley Parkway (SR 601). The last wagon train ran through Thomasville January 14th 1830 just prior to Union occupation that started Chattahoochee River Campaign culminating with Battle of Warm Springs clearing Atlanta Georgia on February 12th 1830 driving Confederate forces back Across Chickamauga Lake forcing them towards Tellico Plains deep within Union lines From here they marched northward under Federal Banner until reaching Chattanooga July 4th1830 thence marching via roadstead Bridgeport Landing crossing Tennessee River above Lookout Mountain becoming Federal SoldiersCamp there until they surrendered September 2nd1865 remaining there until March 15th1868 when all troops mustered out throughout Confederacy Deserted except 3 Companies refusing Surrender at Knoxville Tennesse
