Thomasville is a small town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Thomasville was settled by English colonists in 1793 when they arrived on the east coast of Georgia. The settlement was named for General James Robertson, who had been sent as an envoy to establish peace between England and Georgia. The first post office in Thomasville was established in 1811. By 1830, the town had a population of 1,200 people and it grew rapidly until the American Civil War caused a decline in population and economic activity. In 1865, when Union forces burned Atlanta, much of what remained of Thomasville were destroyed including its courthouse and most of its buildings. Today only about 50% of the original downtown remains standing including several businesses which have been renovated or replaced over time such as the Woodward Theater which opened in 1923 and was once home to one of the first radio stations in metro Atlanta Thomasville is located at (33.547771,-87.916667). Thomasville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,586 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement was founded in 1807 by Colonel George Rogers Clark and his family. The town site was chosen because of its strategic location on the Chattahoochee River between two major Creek Indian villages: Milledgeville to the east and Quitman to the west. Thomasville grew rapidly thanks to its role as a transportation hub for goods moving between Central Georgia and Alabama and via the Cumberland Plateau to Chattanooga, Tennessee. By 1830, some 400 residents were living in Thomasville. In 1835, a post office was established at Thomasville; it remained in operation until 1859. In 1841, General Nathan Bedford Forrest led an abortive coup against President Robert Ewell Jackson that resulted in his imprisonment and eventual removal from office. After release from prison, Forrest began planning an invasion of Texas through Tennessee; he selected Thomasville as one of his bases of operations due to its strategic location on I-65 near Knoxville (the route he would take). When news reached him that Confederate forces had landed at Kings Bay on November 8th (near present day Savannah), Forrest abandoned plans for an invasion and instead retreated back across the Tennessee border into Alabama. In 1865, during Reconstruction efforts following Reconstruction’s end, local citizens supported Ulysses S. Grant’s presidential campaign against Abraham Lincoln; when Grant took office in March 1865, many Thomasvilians decided not to return home after seeing little hope for their future under new Republican rule. However, many did finally return home during Reconstruction’s final years; by 1870–71 there were more than 1,000 residents living inThomasvillian townships statewide including most of what is now Athens-Clarke County.] During World War II much of downtown Thomasvillian was destroyed whenbombing raids hit the area on December 6th 1941 as part of Operation Torch which aimedto destroy Axis coastal installations along Africa's Mediterranean coast.] On January 7th 2006 Mayor Melvin Reeves announced plans for a revitalization project called "T"Towne - which would include renovating businesses downtown as well as creating new housing units throughout town] On July 4th 2006 Mayor Reeves announced plansfor another roundof renovations called "R"Idea - this time targeting residential buildings within city limits] In autumn 2007 it became apparent that City Councilman Maurice Smith had been caught embezzling city funds while servingon council] On October 252007 it became known that City Manager John Lantz had been stealing money from taxpayers too]]
