When the USS Constitution was commissioned in 1775, the Georgia navy was already in existence. Commodore John Sloat resigned his commission as lieutenant governor of Georgia on 12 May 1775 to assume command of the navy and implement a policy of "no peace without naval force." The ship's crew soon refused to serve without pay, setting off a years-long mutiny that ultimately led to Sloat's death. The Constitution served as flagship for Commodore James Wilkinson during the American Revolution, and played an important role in campaigns against British forces in the Carolinas and Virginia. After the war, the Constitution decommissioned at Philadelphia on 20 September 1802 and was sold to Russia for £2 million. She served as a warship until she was wrecked off Turkish coast on 14 October 1809.
