The Suwanee Air Force Base was established in 1948, and the unit has grown over the years. The base is home to two combat wings, as well as more than 350 aircraft and personnel. Today, the Suwanee AFB operates three types of fighter jets: the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and C-130 Hercules. Additionally, it has a number of air refueling tankers and drones. Suwanee is a small town located in the extreme southeastern corner of Georgia. It was founded by Cherokee settlers in 1819, and has been the seat of government for Suwanee County since 1834. The community is known for its historical landmarks, including the original courthouse and jail, as well as an agricultural museum and church.
Suwanee was founded in 1802 by General James Wilkinson and his brother, Colonel John Wilkinson. The town was named for the Suwanee River, which ran through it. The first settler in Suwanee was Major George Hartsfield, who arrived in 1805. In 1811, Colonel John Wilkinson organized the first Georgia militia and built a fort here to protect against Cherokee attacks. The town grew rapidly during the early 19th century, with a population of around 800 people by 1830. By 1840, Suwanee had a smallpox hospital and school. In 1847, General Andrew Jackson came to office and ordered the evacuation of all Native American settlements in Georgia. This led to the founding of Athens as the capital of Georgia in December that year. During Jackson's presidency, Suwanee experienced some growth but also decline due to competition from Athens and other contemporaneous towns on the Savannah River corridor. By 1860, however, Suwanee had recovered somewhat and had a population of around 1,200 people. However, following Confederate forces' Invasion of Georgia in April 1861 resulted in significant violence within the town; this finally demolished most of its buildings including the original courthouse which still stands today as part of Dooley Park off US 229 near Morehead City.
