Sugar Hill is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located just east of Atlanta on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 7,522 at the 2010 census. Sugar Hill has been home to white settlers since 1824, when it was part of what was then known as Cherokee Nation and was known as "The Town on the Creek". In 1848, Confederate General John Buford moved his camp from Milledgeville towithin two miles (3 km) of Sugar Hill after learning that General James E. Johnston's army was planning to march through Chattanooga and cross the Chattahoochee River southward towards Atlanta. After siege engines destroyed Johnston's main artillery depot at Lookout Mountain on December 12, 1848, Buford ordered his men to retire across the river without engaging Johnston's forces. A week later, Confederate General Braxton Bragg arrived at Sugar Hill with over 10,000 troops and burned all but one cabin in town before retreating back up the Chattahoochee River. The burning of sugar cane fields in nearby Acworth led some Georgians to nickname Sugar Hill "The City Without Walls." When slavery ended in America during Reconstruction following World War II, many African Americans migrated northward into newly free states such as Georgia and Ohio; however, most stayed in southern Georgia until they could get citizenship or were forcibly relocated by federal orders during the early 1960s Southern black exodus known as "Operation Lightning Hands." Consequently, only a few hundred residents remain descendants of those original white settler families who began inhabiting what is now known as Sugar Hill in 1824. It is said that one of these early settlers named Nicholas Glynn started growing date palms around 1800 near present-day United States Highway 1A exit off US 95E/SR 2 about 4 miles northwest of downtown Athens; this area becameknown as Glynn Park today. In 1827 Glynn sold land along present-day I-75W from what is now Springdale Township to notorious slave trader Andrew Johnson for $1 per acre ($40 per km²). The purchase included 7000 acres (2%) which would eventually formpresent dayGlynn County including much ofwhat would become SugarHill todayincluding partsof Acworthand portionsofMilledgevillebefore becoming part of Fulton CountyNew York Statein 1785.(See also: timeline below.) He likely bought this land because it lay close to waterways and infrastructure necessary for farming activities; like roads and rails needed for transportation! From here he expanded his business by trafficking goods downriver via canoes or boat trips downstream to marketplaces further upstream.. The following year, the Georgia General Assembly passed the Land Possession Act, which gave man the right to purchase land from Native Americans. One of the first people to claim sugarcane acreage in Sugar Hill was James Bainbridge, who arrived in 1799 and claimed 264 acres. By 1800, Bainbridge had developed a small sugar mill on his property that processed raw cane into refined sugar products. In 1801, Bainbridge's son-in-law, John McKenzie purchased 192 acres of land east of Sugar Hill from James Bainbridge for $6 per acre. This area became known as McKenzie's Ridge because it was where John McKenzie built his rich farmstead later known as McKenzie Manor. The earliest recorded reference to sugarcane growing in what is now Sugar Hill dates back to 1799 when James Bainbridge mentioned that he had planted some trees on his ancestral land near modern day Sugar Hill Road. By 1800 only two years after founding his own business in what is now Sugarhill Village, Bainbridge had turned his operations into a successful refining and marketing operation exporting quality cane products all over America. Soon word spread about this fantasticugar production site and other gentlemen entrepreneurs started acquiring parcels of this vital agricultural commodity throughout central Georgia including nearby Muscogee County (today’s Alabama). By 1800 there were more than fifty plantations located around present day Atlanta with some totaling over 2 millionacre2! Roughly one third of Georgians lived on plantations during this time period3! With such large tracts of valuable farmland available for purchase/ cultivation4 there must have been ample motivation for those owning these lands to work hard and make their mark upon Georgian history!
