From this experience, Appert knew that good coffee could be made and he started roasting his own beans in 1807. By 1870, sugar plantations had spread throughout central Georgia and many farmers began to grow coffee. In 1889, George Peabody bought land near Sugar Hill and began to roast his own beans. This marked the beginning of the modern era for sugar-grown coffee in Georgia. Over time, other small businesses cropped up all over Sugar Hill including Butterscotch Coffee Company which opened its doors in 1916. Today, Sugar Hill is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful architecture and unique history. The original name of the town was "Hillsborough." In 1824, John Cline purchased a tract of land in what is now Sugar Hill from Thomas Brown. The house that stands today on Cline's plantation was built about this time. By 1830, sugar cane had become an important crop in the region and began to be exported. A school was built in 1839 and used until 1850 when it burned down. The first store opened for business in1860 and soon became one of the most popular in town. In 1865, James Waddell bought property northeast of sugar hill from John Cline and founded Waddell-Cline Farms which has produced crops such as cotton, rice, maize, soybeans and wheat ever since. Today Sugar Hill remains a small community with close connections to its past.

Sugar Hill is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,262 at the 2010 census. Sugar Hill is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first white people to live in what is now Sugar Hill were Reuben and Esther Herschel who came from Georgia in 1825. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking the Chattahoochee River. The first store in Sugar Hill was opened by Wm. Hargrave and his family in 1828. At that time there were only about seventy-five people living in Sugar Hill. In 1830, David Lane bought 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land south of present day Sugar Hill for $1 per acre ($10 per hectare). He named it "SugarHill" after his sugar plantation near Savannah, Georgia where he had been born and raised. In 1831 he laid out an intersection of two roads called "Old New Market Road" which served as the town's main artery until it was widened and renamed "Highway Zero" in 1951 following the construction of Interstate 85 between Atlanta and Chattanooga;; however most residents still refer to it simply as "SugarHill". In 1835 Giles Cobb established a small mill on Mill Creek east of present day Sweetwater Creek with twelve dollars worth of flour per barrel from softwood lumber provided by his brother-in-law Elijah Howe; this mill continued operation until 1907 when its assets were sold to Phelps Dodge Company for $3 million making Zuckerhill into one of America's largest cotton mills.. In 1840 John Pritchard settled on what is now Pleasant Grove Avenue close to where Coca Cola Bottling Plant now stands also known as Pritchard's Store which still stands today
Sugar Hill was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. It was located on the north side of Sugar Hill Road, about two miles northwest of downtown Atlanta. The population was about 900 at the time of incorporation in 1881. The first settler in Sugar Hill was Isaac Ruffin, who arrived in 1824. He and his family had six children and started to grow sugar cane on their plantation. In 1835, Isaac's son John Ruffin moved to Sugar Hill with his family and established a distillery there. By 1840, the Ruffins had expanded their plantations to include ninety-six acres (36 hectares) of land. In 1881, Sugar Hill became part of the newly formed city of Atlanta. Theruffins sold their plantation to General James Hartsfield for $10,000 plus interest and fees. The new city government erected a courthouse, jail and other infrastructure within a year or so of its incorporation.
