Stockbridge, Georgia is a small town located in rural Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 5,873 at the 2000 census. It is the home of Stockbridge High School, one of the smallest high schools in the United States with an enrollment of only 1,500 students. The other large community in Fulton County is Peachtree City, which has a population of over 100,000 and a much larger high school system. Stockbridge was founded by settlers in 1810 and became known as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1821 it was renamed for General Samuel Stockbridge, who had led American forces against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Originally agricultural land surrounding Stockbridge were developed into housing estates and shopping centers following World War II; however, most development stopped after the local economy declined in the 1980s. Today there are few businesses remaining in downtown Stockbridge and most people live outside of town either on farms or ranches or within minutes' drive of downtown on Interstate 85. The first school building in what is now Stockbridge was built by Baptist missionaries to help educate African Americans living near Atlanta about Christianity while they waited for permanent homes to be built. This building still stands today as part of Southside Elementary School District No 7; it served as both school and church until 1954 when it burned down due to arson. The current building was erected between 1951 and 1953 and seats 1,500 students inside and out including 350 girls who attend PreK through 8th grade (the only girl's-only high school in Georgia). Since then two more buildings have been constructed: First Presbyterian Church (1954) which seated 478 people; then Hillcrest United Methodist Church (1998) which seated 398 people. Each building has its own unique architectural features that make them stand out from other churches in town: First Presbyterian’s tower contains art designed by local artist Dick Kerestecke; Hillcrest’s stained glass windows were donated by Pastor Rick Barnes; while PreK through 8th grade use a new gymnasium that opened last year called “New Beginnings” which seats 609 students inside plus an additional 295 girls who attend private preschool programs outside of class time (the first all-female high school gymnasium in America).
