The name "Stockbridge" comes from an early settlement on the Chattahoochee River near what is now Stockbridge Township. The community was founded by Quakers who were looking for a place to plant their crops and build their Meeting House. They named their new town after nearby Stockbridge Castle where they had been staying while visiting England. After many years of growth and development, Stockbridge merged with neighboring Decatur County in 1907. In 1930, during World War II, the city of Decatur hosted more than 10,000 soldiers at decatur airport while they were being trained for combat overseas. This made stockbridge an important center for military activity during that time period as it was home to the army's ammunition depot and engine yard as well as two airfields used by bombers and fighter planes. In 1957-1958, when Decatur began annexing adjacent communities such as Dyersburg into its own government, stockbridge did not automatically become part ofDecatur because it had no business connection with that municipality other than ZIP code 82002 which included portions of both townships withinDecatur County before they merged into one entity in 2007.
