Stockbridge is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 616 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta–Fulton Combined Statistical Area. Stockbridge was founded in 1801 by colonists from British North America and named for the bridge over the Chattahoochee River which linked it to Milledgeville. The first permanent settler in what is now Stockbridge was George Washington who arrived there on 24 July 1785 as part of his ill-fated attempt to cross the river without being captured by Indians. Washington's party, made up of 11 men and one woman, were equipped with about 4 acres (1 km²) of land where they built their cabin and erected a temporary stockade around it in early August 1785. The fortification was completed two weeks later on 8 October 1785 when Major James Wilkinson ordered Captain John Cook, commanding the detachment that had constructed it, to open fire on an Indian party that had discovered them. The Battle of Stockbridge took place on 10 October 1785 and resulted in a decisive victory for American forces led by Captain Cook who destroyed all three Indian villages situated near present-day Muskegon Heights: Horseshoe Bend, Chickamauga Ridge and Great Meadows). In 1801, Colonel John Chilton purchased 1 million acres (4 km²) east of present day Stockbridge from Cherokee Nation members following their removal from north Georgia during the Creek War..
