Stockbridge, Georgia is a small town in Macon County, Georgia. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke metropolitan area. The community was laid out by early settler John Stockbridge in 1819. He named it for his father, who had died in 1795. A post office was established here in 1824 and remained in operation until 1959. During the Great Migration of African Americans to the United States during the 1940s and 1950s, Stockbridge became one of several black towns along Interstate 95 that received large numbers of African American residents. In recent years, however, most blacks have left or been reabsorbed into other nearby communities. Stockbridge's economy is based mainly on agriculture and business services such as accounting and real estate services. It also has a few manufacturing establishments dating back to the antebellum period: a local feed mill from the late 1800s and an old cotton gin from 1915 that are still in use today. The town has three churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1819), Second Baptist Church (1875), and Third Baptist Church (founded 1954).

Stockbridge is a town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,538 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by James Stockbridge and his family. The town center is home to the Stockbridge Museum of Art. Stockbridge is located on the edge of the Oconee Valley near its confluence with the Chattahoochee River. The valley forms part of the Alabama–Georgia border and has been inhabited by Native Americans for many centuries. European exploration began in 1670 when French explorers discovered what they thought was a sugarcane field in present-day Clarke County. After unsuccessfully trying to cultivate it, they abandoned their efforts and returned to France that year. The first post office called Stockbridge was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1888. In 1864, a sawmill opened in nearby Holmdel and quickly became one of the most important businesses in town; it continued operations until 1985. At one time or another, every store and farm along what is now Uptown Street served as a significant source of income for citizens of Stockbridge during its early years—a fact that helped make it an attractive destination for settlers during both antebellum and post-apocalyptic times. The community experienced rapid growth following World War II as new development emerged within commuting distance: Discovery Ridge shopping center (now known as Sears), Interstate 85/59 exit 3 (now known as US 301), Calhoun University campus (then known as Kennesaw State University), and then later Tyson Foods corporate headquarters complex all began developments within blocks or miles of each other during this period). By 2000, however, most major developments had either passed away or were no longer viable due to declines in population density combined with changes brought about by technological advances such as cell phones and online shopping which destroyed physical retail opportunities aroundtowns throughout America……………………………………….
