Statesboro is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Statesboro was founded on July 14, 1814 by General James Hance and his troops as a stop on their march from Augusta to Savannah. The town was named for John Catey statesman and governor of Georgia. The first store in Statesboro opened in 1824. By 1830, there were ten stores and two hotels in the town. In 1835, Statesboro became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five council members while still being under military command. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down Union General Robert Ewell's home in what is now known as Ewell's Hill after he had refused to surrender even though surrounded and outgunned by Union forces at Fort Sumter. This event helped fuel secession efforts throughout much of southern Georgia leading up to the war. After the war ended, Statesboro reverted back to its previous form as an unincorporated community until 1956 when it became a city with its own mayor and council members under state law which continued until 1978 when it merged with neighboring Brunswick into one citywide government with mayoral power regardless of township status or tax base size

Statesborough Academy, now known as Carver State College, was founded in 1872 in what is now downtown Statesboro by Dr. John Sowell and others as an agricultural school to help develop agriculture in what were then isolated areas of rural Fulton County. Georgia Southern University (now Samford University) opened its doors in 1901 on nearby Acworth Road, becoming one of the first colleges west ofAtlanta to offer a full-time degree program in education. The townsite site for both schools was selected because it had been abandoned by Creek residents who had moved away during the Creek War of 1812 and their new home would be within easy driving distance of both institutions’ campuses. In 1925, Acworth Boulevard became State Route 99A whenCongress designated it as state highway number 99 to honor GSU’s role in Georgians History Month . In 1930, Statesboro incorporated as a city with a population of 5,000 people; however, this figure does not reflect today’s population which exceeds 20,000 people due to growth around Interstate 75 and other related businesses located within or adjacent to Cities limits
