Statesboro is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 11,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Statesboro was established in 1820 by George Washington Carver and his brother James Carver as a small plantation on the Chattahoochee River. The first post office was founded in 1823. In 1850, it became a town and was named for General Jackson's victory over General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Bull Run outside of Manassas Junction. By 1860, Statesboro had a population of around 10,000 people and it remained an agricultural center until after World War II when industry took over. In 1951, Congress passed the Georgia Constitution which made Statesboro an official city. In 1962, Interstate 95E was completed through the town giving it more access to jobs in Cobb County while keeping Interstate 95 open to traffic from other parts of Georgia; this helped drove down prices for homes in Statesboro and brought new development to town including several high-rise buildings that still exist today. Statesboro was founded in 1795 by citizens of Savannah, Georgia. The town was named after the Battle of Statesboro Creek, which took place on November 25, 1795. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the United States side over the British army and helped solidify U.S.-British relations during the Revolutionary War. In 1801, Statesboro became a county seat of Rabun County and was renamed that year to honor General James Fannin, who had fought in the American Revolution and later served as president of Tennessee. In 1866, Atlanta annexed Rabun County and incorporated it into Atlanta. As part ofAtlanta's growth, demand for land led to several attempts by developers to create towns in rural Rabun County. None succeeded until 1922 when Statesboro was selected as the site of a new city with plans to include a cotton gin and other associated industrial facilities. When Congress passed legislation authorizing cityhood on December 15, 1922, local officials formed an organization known asthe City Council to lead development work on what would become Atlanta’s first large city center. The establishment of Atlanta led to increased traffic congestion within downtown Atlanta and outlying areas including Statesborough Heights and Midtown Center which were designated as inner-city neighborhoods for African Americans (known then as “Negroes”). This transportation problem was exacerbated by State College Boulevard being built through Rabun Countyassets that were intended for agricultural use rather than becoming vehicular thoroughfares for commuters heading into downtown Atlanta or eastward along I-5 or southward along Peachtree Road. The resulting overcrowding caused significantdamage to infrastructure such as streetscape beautification projects; however, also generated significant economic development opportunities because businesses could locate closerto public transportation systems and job centers while still enjoying access to residential property lines extending out into suburban areas
