Statesboro is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,866 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Statesboro was founded in 1814 as a post office by General James Wilkinson and Robert E. Lee. The first store in Statesboro was built on Depot Street by Jno. B. Smith in 1824. In 1830, the village of Statesboro acquired its current name when General John Custer became commander of all Confederate forces pushing westward from Chattanooga after his military victory at Chickamauga Creek on September 22, 1864. The town was renamed for General Joseph Easley Johnston after he surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 following the Battle of Petersburg where Confederate general Robert E Harrison lost an arm and most of his other body parts to Union soldiers during the final days of the war. In 1902, Statesboro became one of twenty-four townships within Fulton County to be annexed into Atlanta; however, it retains its own government and school system with separate board members and voting procedures than those found withinAtlanta city limits (though cooperation between both systems is always welcome). The first post office in Stateboro opened on October 12, 1814 under the name "Fulton."
