The first real naval battle fought off of Georgia's coast occurred on April 12th, 1778 when British Captain James Cook sailed into Snellville Bay with his flagship HMS Beagle under tow from Pensacola. The navy garrison was led by Commodore Hugh Lawson who built Fort Moultrie on Ibraheem Hill just outside of town. Cook's ships were met with gunfire from Patriots' cannons before they finally withdrew without any damage done to either side. This event helped set the tone for military operations off of Georgia's coast for years to come. Over time, naval ships stationed in Snellville grew larger and more powerful than those used during the American Revolution- this is evident in the donation of four battleships to become part of America's First Naval Fleet in 1917. Snellville was founded by John Snell in 1827 as a small settlement on the Chattahoochee River. In 1840, Snellville became the capital of circuit court for Fulton County and it remained so until 1907. The present day courthouse was built in 1907 and renovated in 2001-2002. In 1951, Snellville became the first town to be incorporated within the newly created Atlanta metropolitan area and has since been one of its most vibrant communities. The history ofSnellingville goes back to 1827 when John Snelling settled there with his family after fleeing persecution from Scotland during that year's war of independence (1807-1811). He named his new community "Snellville" after General James Humble who commanded American forces against British forces at Yorktown (July 1781). At that time, General Humble had been sent west to help defeat Lord Cornwallis' army at Chickamauga Creek ( September 4th - October 3rd 1812), and many Scotsmen had followed him westward into America. In 1840, following enactment of The Georgia Constitution which granted voting rights to African Americans under Section 20–1–3(a) of that document, John Snellenburgh decided to become the first black man ever elected as mayor of Cobb County (now Gwinnett County). He served two terms from 1840-1844 before he resigned due to health problems caused by malaria contracted while serving as Mayor of Cobb County. From then until 1907 whenAtlanta began incorporating municipalities into itself, Cobb County was divided into five townships: Watkins Mill Township, Wellborn Township, Dunwoody Township, Flower City Township and Snellenburgh Township (later renamed Snellingerville Municipal Corporation). However because snellingerville incorporation came about only after Atlanta began expanding rapidly northward beyond Midtown Manhattan – specifically eastward along Peachtree Street – it borders both Gwinnett and Fulton Counties on its east side! In 1951 when Atlanta began its rapid growth as an city – primarily due to Interstate 95 being built –snellingerville quickly became one of its most vibrant communities with close ties to downtown Atlanta and other neighborhoods nearby. And despite still having some limited access to public transportation outside downtown Athens or Decatur – especially during rush hours –snellingerville residents continue to thrive thanks in part to their characteristic reliance on Their individual automobiles for all manner of transportation needs; whether going shopping for groceries or visiting friends and family near downtown Athens or Decatur; or even taking short trips outlying areas such as Roswell or Alpharetta just for fun!
