Snellville, Georgia is located in the Appalachian Mountains of north Georgia. The town was founded by James Snell in 1809 as a small community on the Chattahoochee River. In 1827, Snelling donated land to the Georgians for their new capital city, which he named Athens. Athens grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1847, Athens became the capital of Georgia when it was moved from Atlanta to the new city. The original buildings in Snelling Square still stand today and are used as government offices and education facilities. In 1901, Snelling died at the age of ninety-six and was buried in his home cemetery beside his wife and children. In 1903, Athens became a state capital again andSnelling Square served as its first official government building.
