Snellville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Chattahoochee River. The first permanent settler in Snellville was John Barker in 1814. Barker and his wife, Sarah, founded an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Chattahoochee River that became known as Barker's Ferry. In 1836, James Henson purchased land in what is now Snellville from Barker and began to build a new community on the site of his Ferry settlement. By 1840, Henson had erected a log courthouse and five other buildings including a schoolhouse and store. The Town of Snellville was organized on December 17, 1840 by Elisha Kenedy who served as its first Mayor. On November 30th 1849 it incorporated as a city under the name of Atlanta with 3200 residents In 1870, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved Confederate forces into Fulton County to swell their army for operations against Reconstructionists throughout South America. As white southerners were being forced out of their homes and businesses by Union armies and state militias across the Confederacy (and into exile), many local black men enlisted in Forrest's army or took up arms to protect their families and communities from violence or confiscation by white supremacists seeking revenge for lost property and livelihoods. Many African Americans living within Confederate lines also enlisted; some went so far as to cross over into Union lines to gain experience fighting white soldiers while others worked proactively within Confederate households providing food, sheltering family members during raids by Union forces or participating actively in various civic organizations such as churches or schools open to all classes regardless of race). It should be noted that not all African Americans fought outside Confederate ranks: there were also sizable numbers of freedmen who fought for both sides before they left slavery (or returned home after emancipation) – many serving openly under Federal commanders such as Ulysses S Grant – but this article is limited to discussing people who fought directly for Confederates rather than those who simply supported them politically or militarily.)
