The history of the Snellville, Georgia Army National Guard began in 1892. The unit was organized as a militia company and raised for service in the Confederate States during the Civil War. In 1865, when Georgia became part of the Union, the Army National Guard was disbanded. In 1892, an act passed by the Georgia General Assembly authorized the organization of a military battalion within the state militias to serve in support of federal troops in jawboning operations against Native Americans living in central and eastern Georgia. This battalion would be known as Company A (Second Regiment). On December 1, 1892, Company A (Second Regiment) was organized at Snellville under command of Major John Withers. In 1895, Battery H (Third Regiment) was organized at Snellville with two guns and six men under Commandant J.E. Slocum. The battery served until 1898 when it was disbanded due to lack of funding. In 1899-1900 an act by Governor Pickens authorized purchase of three cannons from Boston artillery manufacturer John Denny for use by County Artillery Battalion No 2 (First Regiment) which then redesignated Company C (Fourth Regiment), First BattalionGeorgia Infantry Militia on September 8th 1900 at Snellville Armory with Captain Alfred Ladd commanding officer; also Captain Rufus Fenton acting as Lieutenant Colonel for this battalion from October 1st 1900 to May 11th 1901 . On January 6th 1902 Captain Ladd resigned his commission effective June 30th 1902 because he had become ill with Bright’s disease and died on July 5th 1902 while commandeering artillery equipment from Fort Sumter Ammunition Depot near Dahlonega which he used to bombaded Savannah Harbor on July 4th 1902 On February 26th 1903 Battery G (Fourth Regiment) reorganized at Snellville Armory changing its name to Fourth Brigade Alabama Infantry National Guard with Headquarters and Field Marshal James Longstreet commanding officer; also Brigadier General Thomas Maney acting as Lieutenant Colonel for this brigade from March 15TH 1903 to October 9TH 1903 due to resignation or death of Lieutenants Colonels Prentice and Stephenson effective November 3rd 1903 illness or death unknown ; Finally on December 12TH 1903 Third BrigadeAlabama Infantry National Guard received orders from United States Government changing its name back to Second Brigade Alabama Infantry National Guard commanded by Major General William Troup after Brigadier General Thomas Maney's promotion

During the 1920s and 1930s, members of the Snellville GHQ unit fought in World War I and World War II. In 1951, Snellville's Army National Guard Post was activated as a result of the Korean Conflict. Snellville, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,567 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1837 by John Snell and his brother-in-law, James Gadsden. In 1881, Snellville became one of three towns in Cobb County when it was split from Atlanta. In 1899, the first Baptist church in Cobb County was built in Snellville by Rev. Wm. Hays and Drs. Atherton and Crouse with contributions from Jno. Mapes and others who had moved to Cobb from South Carolina during the American Civil War. The first pastor of First Baptist Church of Snellville served from 1899 until his death in 1916. At that time there were over 100 churches and religious organizations active in Snellville which included Methodists (1899), Baptists (1901), Presbyterians (1910), Episcopalians (1912), Methodist Episcopal Zionites (1920) It also formed an important center for small businesses such as grocery stores, dry goods stores and livery services; as well as manufacturing plants such as a Singer Sewing Machine Works early on which employed many local residents including author Fannie Lou Hamer The economic decline following World War II led to a significant loss of jobs among local manufacturers but also helped lead to a resurgence within the community during the late 1990s through new businesses such as web design company Dooley & Associates In recent years Snellville has seen strong growth with several new businesses opening up including Thalmic Restaurant Group Inc., Kennesaw State University's Gwinnett Business School & Entrepreneurship CenterSnelling Business Park has been developed adjacent to Third Street SE between Dunwoody Road and Interstate 575 providing both housing units for individuals/families and commercial space for various businesses Snellville is located just east of I-285 at exit 316A about halfway between downtown Atlanta and Midtown Atlanta; making it easily accessible by car or bus with good public transportation options available nearby SnellVILLE LOCATION: East side SSE between Dunwoody Rd./I-575 exit 316A& I-85
