The Snellville Air Force Base is home to the Georgia Air National Guard's 436th Wing, which is responsible for all air defense activities in the Peach State. The wing was established on September 1, 1947 and is one of only a few wings in the country that has both an active duty and a reserve component. This wing also features the world's largest AWACS installation, which provides real-time situational awareness to service members and their commanders throughout Godfrey County. Additionally, the wing operates two Boeing 707s as passenger planes for various missions such as funeral flights and law enforcement training. The 436th Wing has been involved in countless air force gifts over the years, from aircraft replacements to equipment donations. Snellville is a city in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fayette County. Snellville was founded in 1837 by settlers from Yorkshire, England. The town name comes from John Snell, one of the early investors in the area and an important figure in the early history of Atlanta. Snellville became a municipality on December 8, 1898. In 1902 it had a population of 10,000 and was incorporated as a village. On July 1, 1957 Snellville became an unincorporated community again with its own government and resources limited to water supply and police services. The first settler in what would become Snellville was George Washington Weatherly who arrived on May 12th, 1837 with his family from Quaker Oastingshire (now Leeds) UK. He built a cabin on what is now Elmwood Avenue which served as their home until 1840 when they moved to 640 acres (248 hectares) of land that he purchased from James Robertson for $500 dollars cash only! The Weatherlys were among the earliest white families to settle in what would become Snellville proper; Gertrude Heaton later wrote that “the choice piece of ground lying between [Atlanta] Creek on one side and Ponce de Leon River on the other made excellent grazing country for cattle” It wasn’t until after Georgia’s admission into the Union that development began – actually many northward-moving pioneers simply passing through due to lack of space or interest at home started settling hereabouts but there appears to be no record or story about any direct connection between these people & this particular location particularly given our current understanding about development within Atlanta during this time period especially given all we know about taxes being paid back then 😕 snellsvilletxo snellsvilletxo
