The navy has a long and storied history in Smyrna, Georgia. The first navy ship to be stationed in the city was the USS Constitution, which arrived in 1798. The USS Constitution is considered to be the first warship ever commissioned by the United States of America. In 1801, the USS Erie was built in Smyrna and served as a flagship of Commodore John Rodgers’s squadron during the American War of 1812. Commodore Rodgers is also considered to have laid down the naval doctrine that led to American victory against Great Britain in that war. In 1815, Admiral James Farragut disembarked his flagship HMS Bonhomme Richard at Smyrna after defeating Rear Admiral David Porter at clashes off Cape Fear River. Farragut was later governor of Mobile Bay before becoming General George Washington’s Commander-in-Chief during the Northwest Indian War (1813-1814). He is also responsible for leading Ulysses S. Grant’s troops during the battle of Perryville on October 7, 1864. In 1847, Commodore John Richardson organized and commanded what became known as Navy Yard Squadron No.4 at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for repairs on warships being built for Mexico under President Don Carlos Manuel de Alvarado y Costilla. These ships included frigates Santa Fe (1846), Balboa (1848), Sacramento (1849), Guerrera (1851) and Pinta (1852). In 1861, Commodore Matthew Cate took command of Naval Station Richmond while Admiral Gideon Wellesley sailed from Norfolk Island with reinforcements for General Confederate Major General Robert Ewell Johnston’s army invading Virginia Beach Peninsula Campaign on April 14th – May 2nd., 1861. During this campaign well over 1,000 sailors died from disease or accidents while serving aboard warships including HMS Hampshire( flagship), HMS Liverpool( Flagship) and HMS Cornwallis( Torpedo Boat Destroyer). On July 30th 1861 Commodore Cate relieved Admiral Halsey who had been Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet Since March 1862 due to health problems caused by yellow fever pandemic then raging throughout much of North America On October 10th 1865 Commodore John Dutton assumed command when Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt lost his life overboard from CSS Alabama while operating off shore batteries near Savannah Harbor following an engagement with Confederate forces near Hampton Roads Va Navy Yard Squadron No .5 moved from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to Baltimore Naval Yard where it remained until stricken from service on January 16th 1966 . The last time a navy ship operated out of Navy Yard Squadron No 5 was USS Yorktown which left Baltimore Naval Yard on December 15th 1978

Smyrna, Georgia is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Smyrna is the largest city in Cobb County and the county seat of Cobb. It is located on the north side of Marietta and has a population of 17,814 as of the 2010 census. The first European to visit Smyrna was captain James Cook in 1775 when he charted what he thought was an Indian fishing village on his historic voyage around the world. He named it "Smyrna" after General Sir John Smith's forces had destroyed that village five years earlier while they were besieging Fort Troup at modern-day Savannah, Georgia. Smyrna Cove now lies within Cobb County and its namesake city retains full civic rights to all land east of Interstate 25/30 including much of downtown Marietta which sits on part of this cove). In 1801 a group of men from England decided to established a new town in what is now Cobb County because they believed that settlers would be more likely to establish homes here if there were easier access to water than elsewhere in Alabama or Georgia. They called their new town "Cobb." Construction began on what would become known as the courthouse square in 1802 and soon people from all over North America started arriving for meetings about setting up shop here. In 1803 Mayor John Hawkins donated land southeast of present day First Baptist Church for use as a public square where citizens could gather for political purposes (notably during Reconstruction). This squares location served as an important meeting place until 1906 when First Baptist Church moved across I-25 from its original site just south of Third Street eastward towards Piedmont Avenue so that it could build its current building which fronts Old Stone Courthouse Square today! In 1809 two brothers by the name of Lumpkin founded Lumpkin Academy which became oneofthe most popular educational institutions in America due to its high quality instruction and well designed buildings still extant today. In1824 Smyrna became home to one of first churches organized by Methodists with Revs John Aiken founding Trinity Methodist Episcopal church there (now First Baptist Church) followed by Bethel AME Zion Congregationalist church also built there circa 1865 (now Christmastown Presbyterian Church). From this point forward Christianity had an important role in Smyrna life with many churches being formed both inside and outside the City limits providing social services such as housing for those who couldn't afford anything better or working hand-in-hand with Civilian Military authorities during times such as Reconstruction when Atlanta experienced great turmoil & violence outside their jurisdiction! On December 8th, 1893 a tornado touched down near modern day Bartow International Airport damaging several businesses along Vinings Road before briefly lifting off just before making landfall again shortly afterwards causing extensive damage some 5 miles SWSEmaining near exit ramps leading into I-85 where parts Meet Rodeo Drive are still visible today! Today Smyrna continues To Serve Its residents through various forms Of Economic Development ranging from Manufacturing Facilities And Retail stores All The Way Up To Nonprofit Organizations Which Help Serve Our Community In Many Ways
On December 10, 1821, Smyrna was founded by Georgia citizens James and Beverly Smyrna. The Smyrnas were later killed in a wagon accident while on their way to take over the governance of the town from their brother John. The original settlement was located on the present day corner of Seventh Street and McDonough Streets.
