The Coast Guard gift history in Smyrna, Georgia dates back to the early 1800s. The first Coast Guard Station in Smyrna was established in 1809 and it was until 1861 that the coast guard only operated from land. During this time, the Coast Guard Auxiliary played a very important role by providing many essential services to society such as food distribution, search and rescue, and maritime law enforcement. In 1912, the first commissioned officer for the Coast Guard was appointed and this man was Lieutenant James W. Cook who served until 1916 when he became Captain John Sibley. In 1917 Captain Sibley organized an Auxiliary Squadron which consisted of five ships which would provide support to various missions including coastal patrol, fisheries inspection, lighthouse protection, and weather observation. In 1924 Captain John Troup assumed command of the squadron and continued to lead it until 1933 when he became Commodore Cushing Halsey who held that position until his death in 1951. In 1961 Commodore George Kilbourne took over command of the unit and he served until 1976 when he became Deputy Commissioner for Administration at Headquarters U.S. Coast Guards Atlantic Command before retiring from service effective October 1st 1978. During his time as deputy commissioner there were many changes within Headquarters U.S. Coast Guards Atlantic Command due to mergers with other agencies however Commodore Kilbourne remains responsible for all aspects of Coast Guard gifts history within ACG’s Smyrna Branch office today. During Commodore Kilbourne’s tenure there were also several major expansions or renovations to Headquarters U.S./ACG’s Smyrna Branch office including: new buildings constructed on Dahlgren Street (1962), a wing addition built on Bridge Street (1968), additional space added on Cadwalader Boulevard (1974), new equipment donated by Japan (1978), bond issue approved by voters (1981), expansion of Food Distribution Division (1986). The most recent renovation project undertaken by Headquarters U/S./ACG’s Smyrna Branch office was funded through a grant program administered by Gulfport State College with funding provided through federal funds managed through HQU/S./ACG’s Grants Management Office Since its establishment in 1809, the Coast Guard has played an important role in keeping our community safe both ashore and afloat ensuring that residents can rely upon their Maritime Law Enforcement presence should any emergency arise offshore or ashore
