Smyrna, Georgia is a city in and the county seat of Smyrna County, Georgia, United States. The population was 15,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Smyrna is located on the Chattahoochee River and its namesake river delta. The city has been known for its cotton industry since before it became a town in 1838. After the American Civil War, Smyrna developed as a transportation center due to its location on Interstate 85 and its easy access to railroads. In recent years, Smyrna's economy has shifted focus towards technology and education. The first Europeans to visit Smyrna were French traders in 1694–95. They called it "Myrrhaeae", after nearby Mount Hermon, which they found abandoned with no sign of human habitation or trade routes leading thereto. Permanent European settlement began with English colonists in 1724 when they founded Augusta (later Augusta County) on the north side of the Chattahoochee River opposite present-day Smyrna while still under British control. The settlement was named after Sir James Robertson, who had purchased land east of the river from Native Americans in 1719 for £10 per acre (equivalent to $2 million today). By 1727 there were over 100 white people living in Augusta County; by 1730 there were 1,500 whites living in 2 counties combined—including all of Gwinnett County west of downtown Atlanta! The new arrivals brought with themajoctoes that established early plantation life throughout late eighteenth century Alabama and Georgia plantations including those at Pemberton Plantations near Dahlonega (now part of Chattanooga), Jonesborough Plantation near Valdosta (now part of Savannah), Sunbury Plantation near Scottsboro (now part of Decatur), White Sulphur Springs Plantation near Allatoona (now Milledgeville) among others still extant today - some sold off after 1800s during African American migration out West into Northern states such as Colorado/New Mexico etc... In 1828 Congress passed an act authorizing two slave trading posts along what are now I-85 & Hwy 404 between Athens and Decatur: one at Marietta Depot on I-85 southbound just past milepost 316 & another at Alvarado Station northbound just past milepost 323 about halfway between Athens & Decatur (& adjacent current day Parkview Cemetery)... These two post officially closed shop 12 years later effective May 1st 1830 effective date unknown... Postmaster General John Capps closed these ports effective Oct 26 1830 following US Indian Removal Act which ended Cherokee Nation’s traditional relationship with North America... This event also marks beginning end for long history/customs associated with slave trading post operated by Creek Nation prior to opening up by white men When National Road was built from Winchester Mass., TN thru GA&AL into Confederncia heading westward many slaves moved their families across this road making their way back home via this route eventually founding small towns like Americus Ga & Myrick Nc where their descendants still live
