The earliest small batch coffee operation in Savannah was established by Nicholas Denton in 1838. Denton became known for his popular French press coffee beans, which he sold from his business premise on High Street. His beans were picked fresh from the grounds and roasted at his own bakery on Broad Street. Denton's successors continued to operate their businesses until 1862, when Captain John Foulds opened a store on Phillipston Avenue that became one of the leading small batch coffee operations in Savannah. Foulds' beans were sourced from local farms and roasted at his own facility before being distributed throughout the city. By 1900, Savannah had become home to two major smallbatch coffee establishments: The Brown Demolition Company (now part of Starbucks) and The Coffee House (now defunct). Both establishments served high-quality French press coffee beans that were hand-picked and roasted according to traditional methods dating back to the 1800s.
