Maga coffee is a type of coffee that originated in Savannah, Georgia. It is made from coffee beans that have been roasted and ground in the traditional way, with a small amount of salt and pepper. The roasting process gives the coffee its characteristic flavor profile. Maga coffee was first brought to Savannah by Portuguese traders in the early 16th century. The Portuguese were among the earliest Europeans to arrive in Savannah, and they started trading with the local Native American tribes. In 1595, Captain Antonio de Sousa chartered an ship called " Santa Teresa" to trade goods with the Muscogee Indians. While on board, he discovered a large quantity of maga coffee beans withinstruments from a tribe of Cherokee Indians living near inhibitory Beach on Etowah River. De Sousa took possession of these beans and placed them into his ship's hull for further shipment back home to Portugal. The first mention of maga coffee being traded in Savannah appeared in print in 1748 when John Lawson mentioned it during his journal entries fortrip alongthe coast of South Carolina and Georgia. By 1820, maga Coffee had become an established commodity throughout much of Europe and North America due to its high quality and unusual flavor profile. In 1825, maga Coffee was also exported to China for the first time through Shanghai merchants.
