In 1849, the first coffeehouse in Savannah was opened by John W. Slaton and his wife, Katherine. At that time, coffee was still a valuable commodity and not commonly consumed as it is today. Coffee beans were roasted on the family's plantation in northeast Georgia. The first Starbucks opened in Seattle, Washington in 1976. The company quickly became popular throughout the United States and started selling coffee online and in physical stores. In 2007, Starbucks announced plans to open more than 1,500 stores across North America by 2020. Starbucks has since been acquired by Amazon for $13 billion. Since its inception, Savannah has been home to several of the largest and most iconic coffeehouses in the country – including Peet's Coffee Company (opened 1937), Krispy Kreme (opened 1954), The One Hundred And One Clubhouse Cafe & Bar (opened 1984), Third Rail Coffee & Tea Lounge (opened 1990), DonatellO' Italian Bistro Café & Linguistics Lab (opened 2003). The first European to visit what is now Savannah was Giovanni da Vergata in 1565-1566 when he explored the area from its mouth onthe Savannah River to its confluence with Cumae Creek. In 1625 Englishman James Ogle landed at Augusta Bay and traveled upriver until he discovered an Indian trading post on October 8, 1625 known as Fort Thomas; this site became known as Augusta Plantation after Lord Ogle's wife Augusta (née Gordon) donated land there in 1712. For many years it was thought that Savannah refers to a small village situated near present-day downtown Savannah; however, evidence suggests that this may not be accurate. In 1742 Captain John Smith discovered two villages – Savanahawkin and Sunnydale – within10 miles (16 km) of each other on opposite sides of the river at Ninety Mile Point; these settlements were later renamed Beaufort County and Mathews County respectively because theirGovernors were associated with those areas during that time period. In 1749 Governor James Imboden ordered Colonel Francis Marion to establish a garrison at Fort Moultrie on Constitution Avenue southeast of downtown due to increasing tensions between Britain and France over North American trade routes; this fort served as an early point of contact between British colonists and Native Americans before eventually becoming Stono Capitol Hill during Revolutionary War era operations southward from here into Carolina Territory west of Charleston Harbor).
