The Savannah-Chatham Air Force Base, located in Savannah, Georgia was the home of the United States Air Force's Military Airlift Command for more than 50 years. The base played a vital role during World War II and the Cold War as a hub for military cargo and passengers. Today, the AFB hosts an active duty air force as well as civilians who fly in support of national defense missions. On September 20th, 1941, General George Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment performed what is considered to bethe first airborne assault on Japanese positions on Guam. The following year saw America enter World War II. On December 8th 1942, Admiral Chester Nimitz arrived at Savannah with orders to establish a naval base on the island of Guadalcanal so American forces could fight against Japanselfthe "First Marianas campaign". In 1945, after Japan's fall and surrender, General Douglas MacArthur established Air Self-Defense Force headquarters atSavannah Airport. In 1951, Congress passed an act authorizing the installation of an air force station at Savannah Airport. This new facility would become known as AFSC (Air Forces Service Station) Savannah; it would serve as headquarters for all USAF activities in southeast Georgia and northwestern Florida. The Department of Defense activated its own Detachment 1 stationed at AFSC Savannah on July 21st 1952 and began operations under Major General Curtis LeMay. From hereonforth until 1991 whenactivated by President George H W Bush as Operation Desert Storm Headquarters), AFSC Savannah was responsible for all military activity within southeastern Georgia including Brunswick County eastward to Dahlonega along I- 95 southwesterly to Waycross Beach northwesterly to Pee Dee Island (now Charleston). AFSC Savannah sustained significant damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005; however no loss or injury resulted from that storm alone! More than $3 million has been invested into repairing infrastructure since Katrina struck - most notably repairs to runways and barracks buildings which were badly damaged by water infiltration both before and after the storm! Unfortunately due to budget cuts over recent years many former AFSC disbandments have taken place - reducing our available personnel pool shortening our reach capabilities significantly! However we are making good progress! We have announced plans to open up 3 additional barracks units within 2 years which should give us enough personnel capacity back up & enable us once againto play a vital role in supporting national security objectives across southeast Georgia
