The area that makes up Sandy Springs was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century and was known as Moccasin Place according to early European explorers. The name "Sandy Springs" comes from an Algonquian word meaning "a hot spring." In 1837, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Georgia and captured Savannah. Sandy Spring Creek, which flows through Sandy Springs, served as the route for Jackson's troops when they moved southwards into Georgia. After General Jackson's death in 1845, his army retreated back north towards Chattanooga. However, before they could return home, a severe drought swept through the area which caused many crops to fail; this led to increased trade with nearby states like Tennessee and Alabama so that Savannah would not be taken by surprise again during war times. In 1907, Sandy Springs became a municipality after being proposed by Mayor John Pemberton and Board of Aldermen member Wm Hickey-Kingston Sr.. The first mayor was Wm Hickey-Kingston Jr., who also served as treasurer at that time The growth of Sandy Springs began slowly but steadily over time due to its location on one of the most important transportation routes between Atlanta and Jacksonville – US 2 – making it convenient for goods exports from Savannah while also providing easy access to jobs outside of town thanks to railroads running through town (the now defunct Atlantia Railway). Additionally, because it coincided with technological advances such as electricity starting being brought into use throughout much of America during this time period (this included start ups such as Coca Cola), businesses quickly started opening up all across town including several banks (one example being First National Bank which opened up right next door to what is today Electric Daisy Carnival). With these factors working together, development quickly accelerated throughout both business districts within town limits with new homes becoming available at near record prices just weeks after incorporation! Today there are still entire neighborhoods or blocks outside of downtown where residents still maintain their own shops/apartments/cafes etc., proving how important community involvement can be when it comes to keeping our local economies strong!
