Sandy Springs, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 25,363 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. It was founded by planters from South Carolina in 1819 and became a steamboat port on the Chattahoochee River. In 1865, it was named for General James H. Sandy who had won a decisive victory over Confederate forces at "The Battle of Chickamauga" in that year. The area now known as Sandy Springs was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. A Creek village called Sandy Springs Landing was located here when European explorers arrived in search of new land to settle during the early 19th century. In 1819, English farmers started settlement around what is now Sandy Springs after discovering rich coal seams near present-day Roswell, Georgia; their discovery led to rename the town "South Carolina".
