The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and rich history of giving back to the community. The USAF's predecessor organization, the Aero Club of America, was founded in 1917 with the goal of promoting aviation and flying as a means for social welfare. In 1948, the USAF created its own air force branch, the Tactical Air Command (TAC), which was responsible for aerial refueling and combat support operations in support of ground forces. The Roswell Air Force Base gift history begins in late 1945 when the United States Airforce placed an order for two Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters. The planes were delivered to Roswell Air Force Base on December 8, 1945 and became operational on January 6, 1946. The planes were used by the Roswell investigative unit during the 1947 UFO crash investigation. One of the pilots who flew the first aircraft into Roswell was Major Donald Keyhoe. The other pilot who flew into Roswell was Lt. Curtis LeMay Jr.. After World War II, fighter jets became a common sight over America. In 1948, General Curtis LeMay activated Project Blue Book which studied unidentified flying objects based out of Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio. On July 24th 1949, Project Blue Book issued its report which stated that there is no evidence that UFOs are extraterrestrial in nature and are instead caused by natural phenomena such as weather balloons or airships.
Roswell, Georgia was once a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. On July 8, 1947, the United States Army's Roswell Flying School reported seeing unidentified flying objects over the town. Unknown to most of the populace at the time, these objects were in fact alien spacecraft. The original plan for what would become known as "Roswell" was to simply observe an alien craft that had landed on Earth some years earlier. After interviewing eyewitnesses and checking pictures taken during that night's events, it was determined that the object was actually an alien spaceship! It wasn't long before word got out about what had happened in Roswell and people from all over started coming down here for investigations and tours! Eventually things grew too hot for Roswell and they decided to move everything else including their research facility back up north again so they could keep it secret from prying eyes!
