The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Roswell, Georgia on July 14, 1947 in commemoration of the first crash of an American jet fighter. The gift was a Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star aircraft. The city continued to grow until it reached its current size in the early 1920s when World War I interrupted growth. In 1928, the city was renamed Atlanta because of its importance as a financial center during the Roaring Twenties.During World War II,Roswell played an important role as a research station for both American and British forces working on warfare against Axis nations. Many high-ranking members of both sides were stationed here including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Adolf Hitler who conducted operations such as Operation Overlord and Operation Market Garden
