Rome, Georgia was founded in 1785 by Capt. John Rome and the remains of his family. It attained its current form as a town in 1821 when it was designated as the seat of a new county, Rome County. The name derives from the capital city of Italy, which at that time lay on the southern border of present-day Georgia. In 1837, Rome became an incorporated municipality and in 1858 it changed its name to Rome Township. In 1902, Rome Township was renamed Roman County and then Rome City after being made an independent municipality within that county.
