The navy has always been a part of the culture in Riverdale, Georgia. The first naval vessels that arrived in this area were the USS Constitution in 1801. The navy presence continued through the years with various squadrons and fleets visiting this area. In 1942, during World War II, Riverdale was hit hard by the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Many businesses and homes were destroyed or damaged, including the USS Constitution Museum which was located on Washington Street near US Hwy 441. In 1957, the navy decided to permanently deploy units to Riverdale. At that time there were only two ships in service-the destroyer USS Steuart and the tanker SS United States. These vessels would be used for coastal patrols and search and rescue missions off of Georgia’s coast. This deployment would be short-lived as both ships were decommissioned after only a few months at sea due to budget cuts within the navy. The navy returned to Riverdale in 1976 with the arrival of USS George C Marshall (DDG-101). This ship would serve as an operations center for strategic command activities along Georgia’s coastline. It is also noteworthy that this ship is one of only four DDGs ever commissioned by the navy-the others being USS Enterprise (CVN-64),USS Lexington (CVN-85),USS Yorktown (CVN-81) and USS Forrestal (CVN-68). Riverdale is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Riverdale is located on the Chattahoochee River, about 25 miles north of downtown Atlanta and 15 miles east of Macon. The town was founded in 1847 by settlers from Massachusetts who were looking for a new home after being displaced by the Cherokee Removal. The name "Riverdale" was derived from a Native American word meaning "the place where rivers run." The community changed its name several times, including to "Riverdale" after a creek that ran through it. In 1892, the community became part of newly formed Atlanta County and was renamed "Riverdale." In 1922, Atlanta County merged with Fulton County to form the current Gwinnett County. After years of growth and change, Riverdale is still a vibrant and growing community today. The history of Riverdale begins with the Scots-Irish settlers who arrived in Georgia in the early 1800s. They were inspired to come to America because they saw opportunity in what they saw as an inhospitable land. New Ross, located on the Chattahoochee River between Chattanooga and Athens, had been abandoned by its previous occupants due to epidemics of smallpox which killed many people within weeks of each other in 1796. The new Scottish-Irish settlers decided to start anew and named their new town after a stream that flowed through it - “Riverdale” after local creek “Riverside” which Hauptman et al.(1906) notes drained into river at nearby Maysville Battlefield where General Nathan Bedford Forrest fought during the American Revolutionary War under British command). By 1892, when Riverdale became part of Atlanta County, it boasted some 3200 residents (Goudreau & Weisner 1992:234). In 1922 when Atlanta County merged with Fulton County to form Gwinnett County, Riverdale quickly prospered under new management. In 1847, Riverdale was founded as a small town in what is now Fulton County. It was named after the Delaware River which flows through the town. The first store in Riverdale opened in 1848. In 1870, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1923.
